DUBLIN SENIOR CENTER ADVISORY COMMITTEE
MINUTES OF: MAY 9, 2002
The May 9, 2002, meeting of the Dublin Senior Center Advisory Committee was called to order at 9:10
A.M. by Chairperson Gifford at the Dublin Unified School District Board Chambers, Dublin, California.

Approval of Minutes - IT WAS MOVED BY BIELKE, AND SECONDED BY CAIN TO APPROVE THE
MINUTES OF APRIL 18, 2002 (UNANIMOUS).

New Business
Tour of the Concord Senior Center - The Committee members unanimously expressed interest in
attending the CPRS District III Workshop titled “Creating Community Partnerships: Designing of a
Senior Center” on Friday, June 21 from 10:30 A.M. to 1:30 P.M. Burr Cain suggested inviting the
Foundation members, the Parks & Community Services Commissioners, Rich Guarienti, Herma
Lichtenstein and Paul McCreary. A suggestion was made that a van be rented instead of carpooling.
Staff noted that a Public Notice would be posted 72 hours prior to the workshop, noting it as a public
meeting for the Advisory Committee.
Other Business
Staff updated the Committee on the upcoming May activities. Staff informed the Committee that a
representative from each senior center (Dublin, Livermore, San Ramon, and Pleasanton) participated in a
one-hour taping of Valley Forum with Dawn Gordner on CTV.
On Thursday, May 16, the Dublin Senior Center will sponsor a BBQ Lunch and Open House. Seniors
who register as supporters during the campaign period will receive a free lunch. In addition, those
referring new Supporters will also receive a free lunch. The goal of this event is to increase community
awareness of senior services. All lunch reservations must be received by Friday, May 10. The
Foundation will pay for each free lunch.
On Saturday, May 18, a “Step Out for Senior Centers” walk and pancake breakfast will be held. The
walk will begin at 9:00 a.m. and culminate at the Dublin Senior Center with a breakfast starting at
approximately 9:30 a.m. The goal of this event is to show the community the positive benefits that Senior
Centers provide to the community. Visual boards and materials will be used. The cost of this event is
free to participating walkers and $2.50 for all non-walkers. All ages are encouraged to Step Out for
Senior Centers. The Dublin High School Service group called S.O.S. (Society of Scholars) will help
serve the breakfast.
George McHugh proposed conducting a Strategic Planning Session in the near future to prepare for the
new Senior Center. He gave an overview about introducing strategic planning to the Advisory
Committee. Although he isn’t prepared to begin the process next month, Mr. McHugh explained this is a
process that would take commitment of six months to one-year. He is currently searching the Internet to
select a model that the Advisory Committee could use. In conducting an internal analysis, George
suggested including the following components: review the programs offered from the past 3 to 5 years,
the budget, and levels of participation, etc. The demographics of the community and census would be
used to depict the community that we are serving. The Committee could develop a questionnaire and
conduct surveys to understand how the community thinks, survey similar agencies in the area (i.e., our
competitors), seek what are the needs, and identify the underserved. Finally, Mr. McHugh suggested that
a task force be formed of people who have not been involved in the Dublin Senior Center in the past five
years. They would be valuable in sharing and presenting new ideas.
Rich Guarienti proposed conducting a Memorial Walk at Martin Canyon Creek on Wednesday,
September 11, 2002. This day marks the Trail Trekker’s first anniversary.
