HomeMy WebLinkAbout3.1 Presentation of the Constitution Week Proclamation and Certificate of Recognition to Daughters of the American Revolution Poster Contest WinnerCELEBRATING STAFF REPORT CITY COUNCIL DUBLIN CALIFORNIA Agenda Item 3.1 DATE: September 6, 2022 TO: Honorable Mayor and City Councilmembers FROM: Linda Smith, City Manager SU B.ECT : Presentation of the Constitution Week Proclamation and Certificate of Recognition to Daughters of the American Revolution Poster Contest Winner Prepared by: Cierra Fabrigas, Executive Aide EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The City Council will present the Constitution Week Proclamation to the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and a Certificate of Recognition to Dublin resident and DAR poster contest winner, Bilal Tariq Rauf. STAFF RECOMMENDATION: Present the proclamation and certificate of recognition. FINANCIAL IMPACT: None. DESCRIPTION: The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), a nonprofit organization promoting patriotism and history, created Constitution Week in 1955 to promote the celebration and study of the nation's founding document. Constitution Week was later adopted by the U.S. Congress and signed into public law on August 2, 1956, by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. It is celebrated annually during the week of September 17-23. The aims of the Constitution Week celebration are to: • Emphasize citizens' responsibilities to protect and defend the Constitution. • Inform people that the Constitution is the basis for America's great heritage and the foundation for our way of life. • Encourage the study of the historical events which led to the framing of the Constitution in September 1787. Page 1 of 2 8 The City Council will present the Constitution Week proclamation and recognize Dublin resident Bilal Tariq Rauf, winner of the 2022 poster contest sponsored by the DAR. STRATEGIC PLAN INITIATIVE: None. NOTICING REQUIREMENTS/PUBLIC OUTREACH: The City Council Agenda was posted. ATTACHMENTS: 1) Constitution Week Proclamation 2) Certificate of Recognition Page 2 of 2 9 Attachment I A PROCLAMATION OF THE CITY COUNCIL CITY OF DUBLIN, CALIFORNIA "Constitution Week" September 17-23, 2022 WHEREAS, September 17, 2022 marks the 235th anniversary of the drafting of the Constitution of the United States of America by the Constitutional Convention; and WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper to accord official recognition to this magnificent document and its memorable anniversary; and to the patriotic celebrations which will commemorate the occasion; and WHEREAS, the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) upholds the goals of Constitution Week, supporting Dublin libraries, schools, and civic organizations in teaching all citizens, especially youth and newly naturalized citizens, about our founding documents; and WHEREAS, Public Law 915 guarantees the issuing of a proclamation each year by the President of the United States of America designating September 17 through 23 as Constitution Week. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Dublin City Council does hereby proclaim September 17, 2022 through September 23, 2022, as Constitution Week, and encourages our citizens to reaffirm the ideals that the framers of the Constitution had in 1787 by vigilantly protecting the freedom guaranteed to us through this guardian of our liberties, and remembering that lost rights may never be regained.
