CITY CLERK File # D@[Q1[22]-r:?lfQ] AGENDA STATEMENT CITY COUNCIL MEETING DATE: February 3, 1998 SUBJECT: Review of New City Entrance Sign Design Report Prepared by: Lee S. Thompson, Public Works Director EXHlBITS ATTACHED: 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) Architect's Drawing End View Print of Existing Sign (photos to be available at meeting) Location Map Rendering will be posted at City Council meeting, and material samples will be available for inspection. A representative from Gates & Associates will attend the meeting to answer questions . . . 6) RECOMMENDATION: ~ Review proposed sign design and provide comments, if desired FINANCIAL STATEMENT: The cost of the signs will be paid by developers. Ongoing maintenance is expected to be minimal, except that any signs that are damaged through vandalism or vehicle accidents will need to be repaired or replaced by the City. The replacement cost would be approximately $9,000 to $10,000. This is comparable to the replacement cost for the existing concrete signs. DESCRIPTION: Approximately eight years ago, the City installed concrete City Entrance signs at four locations (City entrances at north and south ends of San Ramon Road, north end of Village Parkway, and north end of Dougherty Road). A fifth sign was added at the south end of Dougherty Road in 1994. These signs are rectangular cast concrete with an integral tan color and painted logo and lettering (see Exhibit 3). One of the conditions for the eastern Dublin development projects is to provide City Entrance Signs for the eastern City entrances. The first ofthese signs is due to be installed soon on Hacienda Drive just north of 1-580 (see Location Map, Exhibit 4). However, a new design and material is being proposed for these signs, as shown on Exhibits 1 and 2 and the rendering to be displayed at the meeting, The new signs are constructed of a polished granite with brass logo and lettering, The top of the sign will simulate the hills behind the sign with two levels and colors of granite. These granite signs are the same overall 8' length as the existing concrete signs. The height is graduated, and is about 3" shorter than the existing signs at the --------------------------------------------------------------- COPIES TO: Gates & Associates ITEM NO. 8.2 g:\agenmisc\citysign .. . .... high end and about 10" shorter at the low end. The size of the logo and lettering is about I" smaller than that of the existing signs. The top of the new sign is just three feet above finish grade at its highest point. . The existing signs are about three and a half feet above grade. ~, , ~ ~, I' ~: Staff recommends that the City Council review the proposed design and materials and provide comments if desired. ,. ;. ~ t:. .~. t~ (j J\ ii .' t ! . .
