AGENDA STATEMENT CITY COUNCIL MEETING DATE: May 18, 1999 SUBJECT: Tree Removal and Replacement Project for Kolb Park Report by: Diane Lowart, Parks & Community Services Director ATTACHMENTS: None RECOMMENDATION: rJ.Jf \)"V' "'. FINANCIAL STATEMENT: 1) Authorize Staff to issue a Purchase Order for tree removal 2) Provide input on preferred replacement tree Tree Removal- $3,240; funds are available in the FY98-99 Budget Tree Replacement - $4,565; funds will be included in the FY 99-00 Budget. DESCRIPTION: At present there are 20 eucalyptus trees approximately 30' to 35' tall surrounding two sides of the tennis courts at Kolb Park. Funds were included in the FY 1998-99 Park Budget to remove one-half of the trees. Removal of the trees is recommended as the trees are an ongoing maintenance problem dropping debris into the adjacent children's play area and onto the tennis courts. In addition, the tree branches are brittle and are prone to breakage. Staff received quotes for tree removal and the low bid is $3,240; sufficient funds are available in the budget. . It is recommended that the trees be replaced with a tree that entails less maintenance and would blend with the landscape character of the park. The following options have been developed for City Council consideration. 1. Coast Redwood - Native to California Coast but well adapted to inland areas. Fast growing (3'- 5' per year). 2. Coast Live Oak or Canyon Live Oak - Native tree with wide range of varieties. Listed species have moderate growth, are non-deciduous and have deep root systems. Trees will tolerate climate with minimal care. 3. Cedar - Fast growing tree with soft colors. Will grow dense with light pruning in late spring. Tolerates climate well with minimal care. 4. Sycamore - Native to California foothills. Fast growing to 50' with attractive bark with light green leaves. Susceptible to various pest and disease problems but controllable with modem procedures. ' The estimated cost for 24" box container trees, 10' to IS' in height, with planting is $4,565. Funds will be included in the Fiscal Year 1999-2000 Budget. Staff recommends that the City Council authorize Staff to issue a Purchase Order for tree removal and provide input on the preferred replacement tree. . ____________________~__.__~________________________________~_w.~_________________________MN__~_._____________ COPIES TO: ITEM NO.-AZ I.V F:citycoun\ccmtgs\cc518trees.doc
