Registration Comparison RECOMMENDATION Y Receive Report FINANCIAL STATEMENT None DESCRIPTION The following report summarizes the programs and activities of the Recreation Depa.rtment during the Fall Quarter of 1989. This quarter encompasses the months of September , October , November and December . Afterschool Recreation Program Due to a shortage of qualified staff , both Afterschool Recreation sites were not opened as scheduled . The Nielsen School site opened on September 25 and the Murray School site opened on October 9 , 1989 . Since that time , attendance at both sites has been steady , with Nielsen averaging 49 participants daily , and Murray averaging 27 participants daily . Both sites have held off-site activities in addition to the daily activities that occur at each site . Leisure Enrichment Classes There were a total of 65 classes offered during the Fall Quarter compared to 58 during the same quarter last year . Of the 65 classes , 29 were offered for youth and 37 were offered for adults . Overall 72% of the classes that were offered were actually conducted . Popular classes for children included Time for Two ' s , Sing-Along Time , Tap & Ballet , Karate and two new classes , Artworks and Gingerbread House . As always Country Western Dance and Golf classes were well received by adults . New classes for adults included Drawing , Truffles , Fresh Garden Wreath , and American Singles Workshop that was offered in cooperation with Livermore , Pleasanton and San Ramon . Preschool Classes Preschool Classes once again continue to be popular with two out of the three classes in Session I filled to capacity . Classes are offered for_ children ages 2 years-9 months through 5 years . The program is a parent participation program where parents participate 3-4 times per session thus keeping the costs down . Special preschool activities included trip; to the Pumpkin Patch and the Indian Center , and culminated with a holiday pageant for parents . Seniors September was back to school month for most people , but it was "Back to the Memories" month at the Senior Center . A special brunch was held and everyone wore clothing they had worn on a special occasion in their- lives . Additionally portrait sessions were scheduled for those in attendance . The Center began program coordination with the new Dublin Unified School District Adult Education Department . Classes offered at the Senior Center by Adult Education were Current Events , California History , Quilting , Microwave Cooking , Creative Writing and Holiday Crafts . Not all classes met the minimum enrollment necessary and were therefore cancelled . Average daily attendance for September was 52 . Lunches included pumpkin soup and Halloween treats . The highlight of the month was the 2nd Annual Halloween Masquerade Ball complete with live music and hot hors d ' oeuvres . The earthquake didn ' t stop the Center ' s hosting the Young At Heart television show on October 18 . Special event for the month was an _ October Fest with German music , wurst and sauerkraut . Dublin Police conducted an earthquake preparedness workshop and a community singing program was started . Average daily attendance for October was 46 . With cold weather setting in , the Center ' s regular Friday morning brunch was changed to a homemade soup slurp . Cost remained at $1 .00 for soup and a roll or muffin . Chabot College cancelled the Autobiographical Writing class , however after refocusing and renaming the class to Tattle Tales , it continued with a volunteer coordinator . One hundred and eleven ( 111 ) people were served at the Center ' s 2nd Annual Thanksgiving Luncheon with the Dublin High School Interact Club serving lunch and making placemats for the tables . - Average daily attendance for November was 54 . December was filled with holiday activities . A very successful Wreath Workshop was conducted by a senior volunteer . Other holiday activities included tree decorating and an old fashioned taffy pull . The crowning event of the month was the 2nd Annual Holiday Luncheon with 155 in attendance . Interact Club once again served lunch and the group was entertained by the Women of Note choral group . Average daily attendance for December was 44 . Special Events The 5th Annual Children ' s Spooktacular was held on Friday , October 27 at the Shannon Community Center . The event was offered at two different times to accommodate separate age groups ; from 1 : 30-3 : 00p .m . for preschool/kindergarten aged children and 3 :30-5 : 30p .m. for elementary aged children . Craft and game booths with Halloween themes and a puppet show entertained the participants . The 6th Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony was held on Monday , December 4 at the Dublin Civic Center . Approximately 250 people attended the event . They were treated to musical entertainment from the Dublin High School Band and the Valley Christian School Choir . A community sing-along was added to this year ' s event which proved to be extremely popular . The evening concluded with a visit from Santa and refreshments provided by the Tri- Valley Lioness . The Dublin High School Band Boosters served breakfast to a sell out crowd at the Recreation Departments 5th Annual Breakfast with Santa . Over 400 people were in attendance to partake of a delicious pancake breakfast and visit with Santa . Children in attendance were given a snowman puppet filled with crayons and photo button pictures with Santa were available for an additional charge . This highly successful event is truly a cooperative one between the City and the School District . Teens The Teen program has continued to display steady growth and acceptance by the teens in Dublin . Lunchtime activities are offered at Wells Middle School three days a week , and beginning in November , at Dublin High School one day a week . Attendance at the middle school activities has varied according to the activity . The High School activities have averaged 120 participants and spectators . Some special activities offered have included "Friendly Feud" , variation of the television game show (offered at both DHS and Wells) , pictures with Santa (DHS ) ; Decorate-A-Teacher Contest (Wells) , and a Bubble Gum Blowing Contest at both schools . To date the program has received tremendous support from school administrators at both school locations . Youth Sports The sports program that had been planned for grades 4-8 this Fall never jot off the ground The principals at each school were supportive of our involvement , however we were unable to secure sufficient staff to institute the program . Staff will continue to advertise for coaches , officials and scorekeepers in the hope that we can implement a program in the Spring . r V Attached in Exhibits A ;� B and C are enrollment statistics for the Fall programs .
