FINANCIAL STATEMENT None
DESCRIPTION The City ' s Recreation Department has
recently completed one of their most successful quarters to date .
The Fall quarter brought the introduction of a variety of new
programs as well as the continuation of many old favorites . One
of the goals of the Recreation Department is to expand the
program offerings to the public in order to better serve the
needs of the entire community. With the completion of each
successive quarter, we come closer to attaining that goal .
Below is a summary of the program offerings for the Fall quarter
• of 1985 .
ADULT SPORTS
Adult Basketball, Volleyball and Indoor Soccer are provided for
Dublin Residents by the Camp Parks Sports Consortium. The
consortium is sponsored through the Cities of Dublin and
Pleasanton and the Livermore Area Recreation and Park District .
Leadership of the consortium rotates every two years between the
sponsoring agencies . LARPD is currently the lead agency.
The following programs were offered this past Fall :
Volleyball - Women ' s, Co-ed and Drop-in Play
Basketball - Men ' s "C" , Men ' s "Over 30" and Drop-in Play
AFTERSCHOOL PLAYGROUNDS
The Afterschool Playground Program was conducted at Murray and
Nielsen Schools . The Playground was open from 2 : 00-5: OOp.m. ,
Monday through Friday. A variety of activities were planned for
the children . The program was free of charge and children could
drop in at any time.
At Murray School, a vacant classroom was available for our use.
Activities were planned utilizing both the classroom and the
outside play areas . Attendance averaged 49 children per day.
The Nielsen program shared the multi-purpose room with other
school activities . In November, the program was forced to move
to Shannon Center due to the lack of available space at Nielsen.
Prior to moving to Shannon Center, attendance was 31 per day.
After moving to Shannon Center, attendance was 12 per day. The
program will be moving back to Nielsen School in March. In the
meantime, staff is investigating the possibility of having a
portable building moved to Nielsen School that could be used by
the school during school hours and our program after school
hours .

DEVELOPMENTALLY DISABLED PROGRAM
The Recreation Departments of Dublin, San Ramon and Pleasanton
along with Kaleidoscope Activity Center have combined resources
to offer quarterly recreation activities for developmentally
disabled teens and young adults .
This quarters event was a Fall Potpourri Dance held at the
Veterans Memorial Mall in Pleasanton. Approximately 70 young
people representing the tri-valley were in attendance.
FACILITY UTILIZATION
The Shannon Community Center is utilized by the Recreation
Department for City sponsored classes and programs and is also
available for rental by community organizations and private
individuals .
The facility was rented on 44 separate occasions for private
functions . Of the hours available for use, the social hall was
utilized 57% of the time . Overall, the Center was utilized 22%,
up 3% over the previous Summer. We have seen a steady increase
in facililty utilization each quarter since we have managed the
Center.
PUBLIC SERVICE PROGRAMS
Public Service Programs are offered as a community service and
are normally free of charge. Basic Investment Planning, taught
by a Certified Public Accountant and Car Care, sponsored by
California State Auto Association were two Public Service
Programs this Fall .
Additionally the department sponsored a seminar in Planning and
Conducting Effective Meetings . This seminar was planned and
conducted by Park and Recreation Commissioner, Eric Ovlen.
SPECIAL EVENTS
This Fall the department sponsored two special events . Both
events were offered for the first time and were geared towards
children.
Children ' s Halloween Party - This event was held on the afternoon
of October 31, 1985 and was for children preschool through sixth
grade . Children were invited to come in costume and admission
was wrapped candy for 20 children. Approximately 150 children
and 20 adults gathered at Shannon Center for an afternoon of
Halloween games, crafts and costume judging.
Pepsi/NBA Hotshot Basketball Skills Competition was held at
Dublin High School on Saturday, November 2, 1985 . Although the
turnout was low (only six were in attendance) those who
participated felt the event was worthwhile and plan to encourage
their friends to come to next years competition.
SPECIAL INTEREST CLASSES
Once again, the number of classes offered by the department
increased from previous quarters . Seventy one ( 71 ) classes were
offered with an 80% success rate. Of the 23 classes offered for
children, 17 were conducted with a total of 198 participants .
Forty nine (49 ) classes were offered for teens and adults with 40
of those being conducted for 682 participants .

TEEN PROGRAM
Staff has been meeting with a group of Dublin teens to determine
the types of activities that would appeal to teens . A place to
go and dance tops the teen wish list . In addition, classes for
teens only and overnight trips are desired.
The Recreation Departments of Dublin, Pleasanton, San Ramon and
the Livermore Area Recreation and Park District have been meeting
monthly to plan valley-wide teen activities . The first event, a
Disneyland/Knotts Berry Farm trip during the break at
Thanksgiving was cancelled due to poor response. Upcoming events
include dances, car rallys and a ski trip.
TRIPS AND TOURS
Trips and Tours were a new addition this Fall and the two trips
planned were both extremely successful . Fifty-two participants
boarded a bus on October 19 , 1985 for an all day trip to the
Fashion Outlets in San Francisco. Saturday, November 23, 1985,
15 participants spent the day exploring the San Francisco Flower
Mart. City staff as well as a tour director attended both trips .

Children grades 1-6 are invited to participate in the
Afterschool Playground Program. Playgrounds will be
open Monday - Friday from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. starting
September 9th and will be held at two school
sites. Each site will be staffed by two Recreation
Leaders. Daily activities include arts and crafts,
games, sports and much more.
Registration information will be distributed through the
schools beginning September 4. Please phone
829-4932 after August 19th for specific site locations.
