In the Annual Program, sidewalk which is offset and constitutes a possible tripping hazard is saw cut, broken out, and removed with new concrete being poured back at the grade of adjoining sidewalk. In the Sidewalk Grinding Project, sidewalk which is offset one' inch or less will be ground by a grinding machine to match the adjoining grade. A larger number of sidewalk offsets can be corrected this way at a lower cost than removal. Extensive offsets and those caused by tree roots will continue to be corrected by removal and replacement and root pruning. However, correction of other offsets under one inch can be done annually by the more cost effective grinding method. Staff estimates that over 300 possible tripping hazards can be corrected this year with the Grinding Project. The amount budgeted for design/survey/inspection includes both sidewalk programs. Staff recommends that the City Council authorize Staff to advertise for bids. a:grinding\agstauth COPIES T~7 CITY CLERK
