Acceptance of Gift from Altamont Cruisers

RECOMMENDATION:

1. Accept the gift from the Altamont Cruisers in the amount
of$600.
2. Approve the Budget Adjustment
3. Direct staff to prepare formal acknowledgment to donor.
4. Direct Police Services staff to use the funds to purchase
educational video tapes related to substance abuse, a
second hand smoker machine, and a mechanical smoker
machine.
FINANCIAL STATEMENT:
Acceptance of gift will increase avaliable funding for drug
abuse resistance program without additional costs to the City.
DESCRIPTION:
The Altamont Cruisers is a 10-year-old organization composed of classic car aficionados. The group is
based in Livermore, but is composed of members from the entire Tri-Valley area. The group periodically
holds car shows and other social events at various Tri- Valley locations. The purpose ofthese events is to
display classic cars and to generate revenues, through fees and donations, for local charitable
organizations and city-sponsored drug abuse resistance programs. Earlier this year, the City Council
accepted a $1,000 gift from this group to enhance the City's existing drug abuse resistance program.
Recently, the Altamont Cruisers held a fund raising event in the City of Livermore. The group has offered
to donate $600 of the proceeds to the City of Dublin, provided that the funds are once again used to
enhance or expand the City's drug abuse resistance program. Specifically, the Altamont Cruisers have
requested that the funds be used to purchase:
· Video tapes which discourage smoking and irresponsible drinking; and
· A secondhand smoker machine which is a device that demonstrates the effects secondhand
smoke; and
· A mechanical smoker machine which is a device that collects smoke in order to show the
effects of smoking.

Dublin Police Services currently operates an aggressive and proactive drug abuse resistance program. The
program is primarily directed towards Dublin's primary and high schools. In addition to discouraging the
use of illicit drugs, the program also strives to alert student to the potential consequences of smoking and
irresponsible drinking. The City Council has routinely supported efforts to educate the public as to the .
consequences of smoking. In the past, the City Council has adopted a resolution in support of the
American Cancer Society's Great American Smoke-Out and also adopted a resolution in support of efforts
to curb tobacco advertisements directed at children. The purchases and activities recommended by the
Altamont Cruisers are entirely consistent with the City's current objectives and past practices.
Staff recommends that the City Council accept the gift, approve the budget adjustment, direct staff to
formally acknowledge the donor, and direct Police Services staff to use the funds to purchase video tapes
and presentation equipment as requested by the donor.
