Receive presentation pertaining to the Drug Prevention Awareness Program, the educational system currently utilized by DUblin Police Services. 3. Discuss and evaluate the respect- ive merits of both programs. There are no direct costs pertaining to these presentations, which are informa- tional in nature, and conducted for the purpose of providing an overview of the D.A.R.E program, as well as the Drug Prevention Awareness Program, currently utilized by Dublin Police services. DESCRIPTION : Per the request of the DUblin City council, and at the direction of the Dublin Chief of Police, presentations regarding the D.A.R.E. program and the Drug Prevention Awareness Program will be conducted. The present- ations will be conducted for the purpose of providing an overview of the two educational systems and their effectiveness. SUBJECT : PREPARED BY : EXHIBITS ATTACHED RECOMMENDATIONS : ,'-"7 ~ ,",G1/' FINANCIAL STATEMENT : Presentations regarding the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program and the Dublin Joint Unified School District/Dublin Police Services Drug Prevention Awareness Program. James W. Rose, Chief of Police Services . . The Drug Abuse Resistance Education program, commonly referred to as D.A.R.E., is an educational program designed to communicate the perilS of drug abuse to our youth. As utilized by the Alameda County Sheriff's Department, the program targets fifth- grade students in the unincorporated areas of Alameda County. The D.A.R.E. program conducted by the Alameda County Sheriff's Department has a curriculum that is 17 weeks in duration, with the students receiving approximately one hour lessons each week. Each lesson contains a different subject matter, including the consequences of drug use and abuse, alternatives to drug use, ways to say "no" to drug use, stress management, violence reduction, self-esteem, gang education, and other related subject matters. The Drug Prevention Awareness Program conducted by Dublin Police Services in joint cooperation with the Dublin Joint Unified School District, begins in kindergarten and continues through the student's high school years. There is drug education material presented by uniformed members of Dublin Police Services that serves as a supplement to the curriculum provided by the School District.
