AGENDA STATEMENT CITY COUNCIL MEETING DATE: December 21,1999 SUBJECT: Youth Advisory Committee Appointments Report by: Diane Lowart, Parks & Community Services Director ATTACHMENTS: 1) Resignation Letters 2) Applications RECOMMENDATION: (]V. ~nfirm Mayor's appointments to Youth Advisory Committee FINANCIAL STATEMENT: None DESCRIPTION: At the August 3, 1999 meeting of the Dublin City Council, the Council confirmed the Mayor's appointments to the Youth Advisory Committee. The appointments included eleven youth members, one youth alternate and one adult advisory. Two members of the Youth Advisory Committee have resigned: DHS Senior Daphne Robinson and Wells Middle School student Brenton Jones. Letters of resignation are contained in Attachment 1. Per the bylaws, the alternate shall fill vacancies for an unexpired portion of the term. Consequently, alternate . Shelly Kahn automatically replaces one of the vacant positions. Two applications were received for the remaining vacancy. The Mayor recommends the appointment of Jon King (Wells Middle School - 7th grade) to the Youth Advisory Committee and Brittany Brickell (Wells Middle School- 8th grade) as the alternate. Applications are contained in Attachment 2. Dear Henry and Youth Advisory Committee: I have to resign from the Committee because my schedule is busier than I thought it would be. With Basketball, Baseball, and trying to keep up a good GP A, I may not _ be able to attend all of the meetings, and events like I should. I will still support the . Committee as much as I can. YOUTH ADVISORY COMMITTEE ApPLICATION Thank you for expressing an interest in serving on the Youth Advisory Committee. .- The purpose of the Committee is to provide input in youth services, assist with implementation and promotion of youth activities and address issues that effect youth in the community. The Youth Advisory Committee is made up of eleven members appointed by the Mayor with the approval of the City Council. The term of office will be for twelve months with an opportunity for re-appointment in August 2000. The twelve month term commences in September and terminates in August. At my school orientation I saw a big orange poster board in the middle of the cafeteria which was about the Youth Advisory Committee. I had heard about community service but I didn't know how. to get involved. I picked up a flier and this is my application. 2.) I know that it is a learning experience and it helps you learn to work with people and teaches you how to prepare for your fITst job. I also know that I would love to become a part of the Committee. . 3.) I am interested because it would be a learning experience, and I would enjoy it very much. I would also be able to meet new people and show them my great personality. I would also know more about are great city and mayor. 4.) I am a hard worker, a great leader, a helper, and listener. Another important thing is tbat I am very organized and I love to have a voice, and opinion in everything. That's why I think I would \>e great for this position. . . i:~' , . . . 5~7 5.) The event I would be involved with would be a Committee teen dance. I think that it would be a blast and that students from different schools and different ages would get to know one another. We would have soda and candy for a low price and we would have a really great DJ. I know that this activity would be a blast because my school dances are extremely fun. But with different people. 6.) I am involved with leadership at Wells Middle School and play competitive soccer and softball. 7.) My soccer and softball are after school practices and games. How did you find out about the Youth Advisory Committee? Henry came in to my Leadership Class at Wells Middle School. 2. What do you know about the Youth Advisory Committee? The Youth Advisory Committee comes up with ideas and activities for teens in Dublin to participate in. Y AC comes up with fundraiser for these activities. Y AC takes these ideas to the Dublin City Council. 3. Why are you interested in serving on this Committee? I am interested in serving on this Committee because I feel like I should be more involved in making Dublin a better place for teens. And it sounds like fun. 4. What skills do you possess that would make you a strong candidate for the Youth Advisory Committee? I am organized, a leader, and a planner. I am creative and like to come up with new ideas. I lead the effort to put together a "New Student Reception" at Wells Middle School this year. I've helped decorate for the dances. I always follow through when I make a commitment to do something. I try to get other people involved to help out. 5. If you could be involved in planning for one event, what would it be? Please explain. I would like to adopt a family for a whole year. I would like to help the kids with their schoolwork, if they need it. I would like to help out elderly people at the Senior Citizens Center, like plant gardens. I would like to organize an Easter Egg Hunt for kids. I think it would be fun to plan a party for teens to celebrate the end of school. 6. What activities are you currently involved in or will be involved in the 1999-2000 sclwol year? I am involved in Jazz Dance and Wells Leadership activities. 7. How would the activities in question #6 effect your time commitment to the Yolllh Advisory Committee? I have Jazz once a week on Monday nights. Once a month I help with the school dance on Friday nights. Other than that I am available to participate in Y AC. 8.
