Guy Houston Mayor for Dublin 7611 San Sabana Road, Dublin, CA 94568 **** **** **** **** TO: Senator Richard Rainey and Cindy H ughcs RE: WOMAN OFTHE YEAR AWARD Bonnie McCamon lives in the City of Dublin and is a resident of the Arroyo Vista development, the city's low-income housing. Bonnie is President of the Arroyo Vista Resident Council, the non-profit entity that represents the residents. Bonnie's efforts to improve the quality of life for the residents of Arroyo Vista and to encourage their efforts to become self-sufficient has been remarkable. As a leader in the community, Bonnie's achievements has been consistent and varied: . 1- She has organized social activities during the Christmas and Thanksgiving holidays for the specific purpose of ensuring that the families and children have enough food for the holidays and the kids have toys and presents. Through her efforts, 225 children received toys and 105 families received groceries and meats for the holidays. She has organized Clean-Up Days at Arroyo Vista and solicited donations from local businesses to make the events special. The appearance of Arroyo Vista has improved dramatically since Bonnie started the program. Working with the Dublin Police Depart- ment, as leader of the Resident Council she submitted a joint application to Clorox for funding for lighting of the basketball courts, which was awarded in 1997. II 2- She is currently working on a project with local organizations, called" Dress Up For Work", which will provide business clothing for those entering the job market at Arroyo Vista. One of the barriers to employment is the lack of proper professional cloth- ing when a person is interviewed for a job. A job applicant is counseled on dress, groom- ing and interview skills prior to access to the clothes. Bonnie worked with Valley Chris- tian Church, who is renting a retail space in Dublin for the program. . 3-Most noteworthy, however, have been her effOlts to create an operating child care center at Arroyo Vista. the lack of affordable child care is a barrier that makes it difficult for many Arroyo Vista residents to seek and keep employment. In 1997, Bonnie .devel- oped a business plan for the child care center, submitted an application and received Community Development Block Grant funds for development costs for the center. Bonnie has been a tireless fund raiser for the center. She has spoken to numerous community groups, appeared on local cable television, and featured in local newspapers all towards the goal of raising support for the center. Without the efforts of Bonnie McCamon , the child care center would not be a reality. Paid jOr by Guy flOUSt01I Mayor jOr Dublin . . . 4-If all that wasn't enough, she is active in the California Trnnsplullt Network, which she became interested in when her son, Michael, was shot and killed in a local grocery store. She made the decision to donate most of his organs. Bonnie is currently on AFDC and attending Las Positas College, she is in pursuit in a BA degree in Psychology. She has one child, 10 year old Kiralea, at home, Despite limited resources and time, she has made the needs of lower income families more clearly defined to other families, organizations and community leaders in Dublin. Pleuse give Bonnie McCammon your greatest consideration for this important uward. Shc is somcbody that I am very proud to call a Dublin resident. leJ'~ Gq S.
