Unit
FINANCIAL STATEMENT:
Acceptance of gift will increase avaliable funding for the
Police Services Bicycle Unit without additional costs to the
City.

DESCRIPTION:
DeSilva-Gates Construction, a Dublin-based company, has expressed a desire to offer financial support
to the City's Police Services. Specifically, they have offered to make a donation to the City in the amourit
of $1 ,000, provided that the funds are used to provide support to the City's Bicycle Unit.
The City's Bicycle Unit is composed 8 trained officers who spend a portion of their workweek patrolling
certain areas of the City on bicycles. The use of bicycles is superior to the use of patrol vehicles in certain
instances, such as when stealth is required when approaching a potential crime scene or engaging in a
pursuit over uneven terrain. The use of bicycles also tends to make police officers appear less
intimidating and encourages positive contacts between the police and the citizens.
The City currently owns.? bicycles which are used by the Bicycle Patrol. Several of the bicycles are not
fully outfitted with storage and other accessory equipment Should the City Council accept the gift, the
money could be effectively expended to purchase this equipment and bring the City's entire bicycle fleet
up to standard.
Staff recommends that the City Council accept the gift, approve the budget adjustment, direct staff to
formally acknowledge donor, and direct Police Services staff to use the funds to purchase equipment and
supplies related to the Bicycle Unit.
