One component of this Program includes a Business Anniversary Program, to recognize the achievements of significant milestone anniversaries in Dublin. The Anniversary Program acknowledges businesses that have been in Dublin for 10, 20 and 30 years and calls for businesses operating for 20 and 30 years to be recognized at a City Council meeting in May and November of a given year. Businesses operating in Dublin for 10 years would receive a Certificate of Recognition and a letter from the City thanking them for their contribution to this community. This year, the City has three businesses celebrating their 30th year, 18 businesses celebrating their 20th year, and approximately 80 businesses celebrating their 10th year in the City of Dublin. Those businesses are included in Attachment 1. StopWaste Partnership Business Efficiency Awards On October 16, 2009, StopWaste.Org held their annual StopWaste Partnership Business Efficiency Awards to honor medium and large Alameda County businesses whose leadership and continuous efforts to improve environmental performance. This year, 12 companies from cities throughout Alameda County, including Dublin's Carl Zeiss Meditec and Save Mart Supermarkets, were recognized for their outstanding achievements in reducing their amount of waste generated and making their operations more efficient. Carl Zeiss Carl Zeiss, a world leader in diagnostic and therapeutic devices for eye care professionals with over 500 employees in Dublin, has several recent achievements in preventing and reducing waste. Carl Zeiss has worked with packaging vendors to reduce waste and also expanded its recycling program to include cardboard, pallets, toner cartridges, a-waste and batteries. The company also expanded cafeteria composting to include corn-based containers and utensils, installed more efficient paper dispensers for bathrooms and coffee stations and gave employees reusable coffees mugs to reduce disposable cup waste. In total, Carl Zeiss' reduction efforts have reduced its trash expenses by 50 percent. Save Mart Supermarkets Save Mart Supermarkets is a privately held food chain with more than 200 employees at their Dublin regional headquarters. These employees have worked hard to reduce the environmental impact of their Lucky Supermarket stores in Alameda County. Save Mart participates in composting and recycling on a regional scale and also utilizes returning delivery trucks to backhaul materials and transport goods for other firms. Where backhauling is not available, the company has set up a program to collect compostable materials from its stores. As a result of these regional efforts, stores are able to divert more materials and save money on their garbage bills. Through all of these programs Save Mart has reduced the company's waste stream by 35 percent. Page 2 of 3 About the StopWaste Partnership The StopWaste Partnership, a program of StopWaste\Org, is a free technical assistance program that has helped hundreds of Alameda County companies reduce the waste they produce, conserve energy and natural resources, and cut company costs through education, grants and expert advice from sustainability professionals.
