FINANCIAL STATEMENT:
The donation amount of $2,000 will be used for the expansion of Dublin Police Services child safety
programs, with $1000 towards "radKIDS" training for staff and $1000 for program literature and supplies.
DESCRIPTION:
Dublin Police Services' Crime Prevention Unit coordinates several programs focused on child safety and
community outreach to children. Currently, DPS offers educational/training services in drug prevention
(Drug Education & Prevention Program), bicycle safety (bicycle rodeo program), and child passenger
safety (Car Seat Check-Up Program). DPS also offers "Kids-in-Action," which is an outreach program
giving law enforcement staff the opportunity to mentor children and build their self-esteem.
Dublin Police Services applied for and was awarded a grant from Target Corporation, in the amount of
$2000, to expand our child safety programs. The purpose of these grant funds is to allow Dublin Police
Services to implement the nationally acclaimed "radKIDS" program, which teaches children from
Kindergarten - 7th grade to "respond to aggression defensively." Kids are taught in nine, one-hour
increments, culminating in a graduation. The "radKIDS" program has been featured on the CBS Early
Show, Oprah, CNN Primetime, and other publicly broadcasted programs. In addition, it has received the
Mayo Clinic Seal of Quality. Over 125,000 children have been trained in the "radKIDS" personal
empowerment safety education program, and it is reported that 39 children threatened with abduction used
their "radKIDS" skills and returned safely to their families (Source: www.radkids.org).

• Stranger Tricks (including Physical Defense against Abduction)

Of the $2000 total award, $1,000 would be used for the required training of our Community Safety
Assistants to teach "radKIDS" and the remaining $1,000 towards the purchase of safety literature and
materials.
The Target Corporation, which has a store in Dublin, continues to demonstrate its commitment to
community partnerships through its ongoing involvement in Crime Prevention/Law Enforcement
Programs. This commitment is evidenced by Target's corporate sponsorship of the Dublin Police
Services "National Night Out" campaign. It was at this year's National Night Out event that Target
officially announced their generous $2000 donation to Dublin Police Services.
The acceptance of this grant will require a budget change for Fiscal Year 2009/2010 to account for the
additional revenue and to offset training and program expenditures associated with implementing the
"radKIDS" program.
RECOMMENDATION:
1. Accept the grant from the Target Corporation in the amount of $2,000
