FINANCIAL STATE T: Suffi i n n w r included in the Fiscal Year 2008-2009 Bud et. DESCRIPTION: Dublin Pride Week was celebrated from Friday, Apri125 to Saturday May 2, 2009. A number of activities and projects were conducted and are summarized below. COPIES TO: ITEM NO. '~ " Dublin Pride Week Poster Contest All students from both public and private schools in the City of Dublin were invited to participate in this year's Dublin Pride Poster Contest. The students were asked to create posters that reflected this. year's theme "Planet Dublin". As in previous years, the Dublin/San Ramon Women's Club volunteered to coordinate the poster contest, which included distributing the materials, judging the posters, and distributing the certificates. Each of the Poster Contest participants will be receiving Certificates of Appreciation. The City awards first and second prizes to individuals from each of the following grade categories: Kindergarten-1St grade, 2nd grade-3rd grade, 4th grade-5th grade, 6th grade-8th grade, and 9th grade-12th grade, as well as an overall grand prize winner. The grand prize winner receives a $100 Target gift card, the first prize winners receive a $25 Target gift card, and second prize winners receive a $15 Target gift card. The grand prize, first prize, and second prize winners also have their posters displayed at the Civic Center and will be presented with Certificates of Merit. Additionally, a Classroom Award is given in the amount of $200 to the teacher of the Grand Prize Winner to be used in his or her classroom. Volunteers met at 8:00 a.m. at Shannon Park to receive instructions and supplies for the various projects throughout the community. Mayor Sbranti began the event with a welcoming address and word of thanks to the volunteers. Volunteers were given Dublin Pride Week t-shirts and were provided snacks, juice and water including muffins donated by Mimi's Cafe. At the completion of the projects, all volunteers were invited to a free barbecue provided by the Dublin Lion's Club. Volunteer Day consisted of the following projects: Senior Projects: There were over 130 volunteers that made up the 19 separate Senior Project Teams. The teams were able to assist 26 senior homes with a variety of activities that ranged from cleaning windows to minor home repair. This project was coordinated by the Senior Support Program of the Tri-Valley, which assists the City in finding Dublin seniors who are in need of some assistance. Heritage Center: Approximately 15 volunteers raked, pulled weeds, and engaged in other beautification activities at the Heritage Center. Frederickson Elementary & Wells Middle School: More than 20 volunteers were sent. to Frederickson Elementary to spread bark .chips around the playground areas in the school. Following the work at Frederickson, the volunteers moved to Wells Middle School to conduct weed abatement within the track area. Dublin Elementary: The Fallon School's California Junior Scholarship Federation (CJSF) Club worked on improving the Dublin Elementary landscaping by conducting a project within the school's garden boxes. The CJSF group totaled more than 20 individuals. School Ball Wall Painting: An additional 20 volunteers were sent to Dublin, Murray, and Dougherty Elementary Schools to paint the ball walls for the children. While at Dougherty Elementary, the group was also able to assist the school with some general landscaping work at the school's compost garden. City Park Projects: Over 75 volunteers assisted with beautification and clean-up projects at various park locations within the City. For example, the Dublin High School Leadership Club painted decorative walls at Shannon Park as well as picked up litter at the park. Another group of volunteers painted the wall at the ~~5 maintenance yard at Emerald Glen Park. Other projects included painting at Dolan Park and cleaning and landscaping at the Dublin Sports Grounds. Storm Drain Medallions: More than 40 volunteers were engaged in pasting medallions to the City's storm drains, which warn against dumping material into the storm drain system. Food Drive: This year, Dublin Pride Week included a Food Drive organized as part of an Eagle Scout Project. Food donations were collected door-to-door by Boy Scouts and other volunteers. The City was able to collect approximately 36 cubic feet of food. All food collected was donated to the. Dublin Children's Emergency Council. In addition, a special thanks goes out to the Cities of Livermore, Pleasanton, and San Ramon for loaning the City additional yard maintenance tools. Due to the significant increase in volunteers this year, the City alone did not have enough tools for everyone to use and to keep everyone busy. The other Tri-Valley cities stepped in and provided the needed tools, which was integral to completing the number of projects planned in a timely manner. Martin Canyon Creek Nature Walk Following the Volunteer Day Activities on April 25th, naturalist and park ranger Katie Colbert lead a nature walk along the Martin Canyon .Creek Trail exploring the creek's diverse flora and fauna. Twelve people participated in the walk this year. Water-wise Workshop Residents were invited to the Dublin Library on Tuesday, April 28th for an informational workshop on drought tolerant gardening. This project was organized and sponsored by DSRSD and Zone 7 Water Agency. Forty residents attended the workshop. Solar Cities Workshop On Wednesday, April 29th, Tri-Valley residents were invited to the Dublin Civic Center to learn about residential solar energy conversions. The workshop educated residents about incentive and rebate programs offered through the California Solar Initiative Program and federal tax credits, and provided them with an opportunity to meet professionals working in the industry. Approximately 40 residents attended the event. Household Hazardous Waste Event The City sponsored another successful household hazardous waste drop off event, which was managed by Amador Valley Industries and held at the Micro Dental parking lot on Arnold Drive. The City's annual household hazardous waste event ensures that materials such as paint, used oil, batteries, pesticides and other harmful chemicals are disposed of properly. In total, there was 26,649 pounds of waste collected. 2009 Dublin Pride Week Committee At the forefront of this year's activities was the Dublin Pride Week Committee. The Committee comes together each year to plan and organize. each Pride Week activity. This year, the Committee was made up of various community members and organizational representatives. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that City Council receive the report and formally recognize poster contest winners and Dublin Pride Partners. ~~s
