SUBJECT: Recognition of Carl Zeiss Meditec for Outstanding Emergency
Preparedness Efforts

Recognize Carl Zeiss Meditec for its emergency preparedness
efforts.
None
DESCRIPTION: On February 13, 2009, Carl Zeiss Meditec conducted, in
coordination with the City of Dublin, an emergency evacuation exercise for its employees. The exercise
scenario was centered around the possibility of an arson attempt at the facility. Early on in its preparation,
Staff from Carl Zeiss Meditec contacted the City of Dublin to inquire about partnership opportunities in
conducting the exercise. City participation was sought to add a sense of realism to the exercise as well as
to instruct Staff at Carl Zeiss Meditec on how the City will respond to such situations. Such partnerships
are important to the City not only because they promote a prepared community, but also because
conducting operations at different business sites gives the City's first responders an opportunity to
familiarize themselves with the intricacies of each location to which they .may need to respond.
In response to the partnership request, Staff from Fire, Police, and the City Manager's Office both met and
worked with the exercise planning committee at Carl Zeiss Meditec to ensure a full functional City
response occurred on the day of the exercise. The arson scenario was chosen as it is one that would require
evacuation of the building as well as elicit a response from multiple City departments - to put out the fire,
to treat any injured, to ensure safety, and to investigate the crime.
The exercise began at 11:00 a.m. with Staff at Carl Zeiss Meditec engaging the fire alarm at the facility. A
full evacuation of the building occurred and Police and Fire units showed up as scheduled shortly
thereafter. The event was a successful and significant learning and preparedness tool for all involved. The
efforts undertaken by Carl Zeiss Meditec in fostering an environment of preparedness, ensuring that its

employees know how to respond to emergency situations, and working with the City to increase response
capabilities bring great credit upon itself, and when a real emergency situation occurs, will result in
protecting property, in preventing injury, and in saving lives. Therefore, Staff is recommending that Carl
Zeiss Meditec be recognized for its emergency preparedness efforts, which stand as an example to other
businesses within the community. Staff looks forward to continuing its partnership with Carl Zeiss
Meditec in the future and using it as an example to establish preparedness relationships with other
business within the City of Dublin.
RECOMMENDATION: Recognize Carl Zeiss Meditec for its emergency preparedness
efforts.
