SUBJECT: Recognition of SuperGen, Inc., for Outstanding Participation in the
"Great Race for Clean Air" Competition

RECOMMENDATION: Recognize SuperGen, Inc., for its outstanding participation in the
"Great Race for Clean Air" competition.
FINANCIAL STATEMENT: None
DESCRIPTION: During the month of October 2008, Tri-Valley employers sought to
reduce carbon dioxide emissions through participation in the "Great Race for Clean Air" competition.
SuperGen, Inc., participated in this pilot program, which was sponsored by the Bay Area Air Quality
Management District (BAAQMD). The program encouraged walking, biking, carpooling, vanpooling and
public transit rather than driving solo to work. Employers were encouraged to offer alternative
transportation programs to employees to encourage and reward commute alternative use; the use of
commute alternatives has been proven to greatly reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
The competition was promoted during the "Great Race for Clean Air Summit" kick-off event held in June
2008, where employers were invited to listen to keynote speakers who discussed transportation policy and
the offset of carbon dioxide emissions, and held breakout sessions on alternative transportation commute-
benefits programs. Throughout the October 2008 competition, surveys were conducted on employee
commute activity to track use of alternative transit, and carbon dioxide reduction was calculated at the end
of the campaign.
Dublin employer SuperGen, Inc., won the category, "Highest Company Participation," with approximately
17% of its workforce taking part in the campaign. SuperGen's efforts led to 2,192 pounds of avoided

carbon dioxide emissions. Overall, participants in the "Great Race for Clean Air" campaign tracked the
reduction of 35,409 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions in October 2008.
Members of the Tri-Valley Air Quality Resource Team will review the results of the program and
determine if there is sufficient funding in the team's Fiscal Year 2009-2010 budget to continue the
program in future years.
RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the City Council recognize SuperGen, Inc.,
for its outstanding participation in the "Great Race for Clean Air" competition.
