EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
The City Council will present a proclamation for Arbor Day, April 26, 2019.
STAFF RECOMMENDATION:
Present the proclamation.

DESCRIPTION:
Arbor Day is an annual observance that celebrates the role of trees in our lives and
promotes tree planting and care. It was first observed in 1872 in Nebraska with the
efforts of J. Sterling Morton, considered to be the founder of Arbor Day.
In its commitment to the urban forest, Dublin maintains over 12,000 trees. Wit h our
annual maintenance programs of both pruning (1/5 of all City trees annually) and
planting (over 400 trees planted in 2018), the City is an active partner in promoting the
wellbeing of trees and all the benefits they provide those who live in or visit the City of
Dublin.

A PROCLAMATION OF THE CITY COUNCIL
CITY OF DUBLIN, CALIFORNIA
“Arbor Day – April 26, 2019”
WHEREAS, in 1872, J. Sterling Morton proposed to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture that a special day be set aside for
the planting of trees and the holiday, called Arbor Day, was first observed with the planting of more than a million trees in
Nebraska. Arbor Day is now observed throughout the nation and the world; and
WHEREAS, trees can reduce the erosion of precious topsoil by wind and w ater, lower heating and cooling costs, moderate
the temperature, clean the air, produce oxygen and provide habitat for wildlife; and
WHEREAS, trees are a renewable resource giving us paper, wood for our homes, fuel for our fires and countless other
wood products; and
WHEREAS, trees in the City of Dublin increase property values, enhance the economic vitality of business areas, and
beautify the community. Trees, wherever they are planted, are a source of joy and spiritual renewal.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Dublin City Council, do hereby proclaim April 26, 2019, as Arbor Day
in the City of Dublin and urge all citizens to support efforts to protect our trees and woodlands.
