Foss, City Manager SUBJECT: Proclamation in Recognition of Small Business Saturday (November 24, 2018) Prepared by: Suzanne Iarla, Management Analyst II EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The City Council will consider proclaiming November 24, 2018 as Small Business Saturday in the City of Dublin in conjunction with the national Small Business Saturday campaign. STAFF RECOMMENDATION: Proclaim November 24, 2018 as Small Business Saturday in Dublin, and present the proclamation to the Dublin Chamber of Commerce on behalf of all local small businesses. FINANCIAL IMPACT: None. DESCRIPTION: The national Small Business Saturday campaign was founded by American Express in 2010 to encourage people to support small, local businesses. The event typically takes place on the Saturday following Thanksgiving and “Black Friday,” known as the first day of the busy holiday shopping season. There are about 100 businesses in Dublin included on the Shop Small map by American Express this holiday season. STRATEGIC PLAN INITIATIVE: This proclamation support's the City Council's Strategic Plan Strategy #4, "Focus efforts on ways to strengthen the City's economic vitality, including the Downtown, through public investment and economic development.” NOTICING REQUIREMENTS/PUBLIC OUTREACH: None. Small Business Saturday Proclamation A PROCLAMATION OF THE CITY COUNCIL CITY OF DUBLIN, CALIFORNIA “Small Business Saturday – November 24, 2018” WHEREAS, the City of Dublin believes that small businesses are the backbone of our economy and the glue that holds communities together. According to the United States Small Business Administration, there are over 30 million small businesses in the United States and small businesses create nearly two out of three jobs in our national economy; and WHEREAS, the City of Dublin supports our local businesses that create jobs, spur economic growth, boost our local economy, and preserve our neighborhoods; and WHEREAS, advocacy groups and public and private organizations across the country have endorsed the Saturday after Thanksgiving as Small Business Saturday; and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Dublin City Council, do hereby proclaim November 24, 2018, as “Small Business Saturday” and urges the residents of this community, and communities across the country to support small businesses and merchants on Small Business Saturday and throughout the year.
