As the former director of the Dublin Senior Center, Ms. Leonard expressed how pleased she was to see the construction of the new Senior Center underway. Ms. Leonard gave an overview of the City's Goals and Objectives process, an overview of the status of the adopted Goals and Objectives for Fiscal Year 2004-2005 for the Parks and Community Services Department. Ms. Leonard then reviewed the one goal proposed for Fiscal Year 2005-2006 that pertained to senior programs and services. This goal is to "coordinate the grand opening of the Senior Center to the public". Ms. Leonard indicated that the Advisory Committee will asked for input regarding the specifics of the grand opening at a future meeting. No further recommendation or additions were made by the Committee for the Preliminary Goals and Objectives for senior programming for Fiscal Year 2005-2006. 7.1 STEP OUT FOR SENIOR CENTERS EVENT Staff presented the overview of the program format for the 4TH Annual Step Out for Senior Center event. A discussion was formed about "who was the audience?". Staff indicated that "Step Out"was a program that helped to bring awareness to the community about the Center and to attract new participants. Each year Mayor Lockhart has led the walk. Last year the distance was increased from one mile to 1 %z miles starting from the Dublin Library to the Senior Center. A suggestion was made to change the route again starting at the Dublin Library, then heading west on Dublin Boulevard toward the underpass, and past Safeway so more people could see the procession of walkers. Minutes—February 3, 2005 Page 2 of 3 It was suggested that the walk could possibly include a tour of the new Senior Center. Staff indicated that the facility may not be ready for a tour at that time. Staff was asked the purpose of continuing such a highly publicized event at the existing Senior Center? Since the existing facility was viewed by some as not as attractive as the new facility, it was suggested the event be postponed until the new Senior Center is open. Staff explained the event has been held in May since that is Older Americans Month. That week is also Senior Center Awareness Week. Commissioner Cain felt that it would be too hard for Staff to coordinate an event like Step Out during the same month as the Grand Opening. He felt the Grand Opening should be a totally separate affair than the "Step Out Program". Commissioner Cain indicated that the Step Out event could be viewed as a crossing of the threshold from the old to the new Senior Center which has a potential of showcasing the activities and services to'the Senior Community in anticipation of the Grand Opening of the new Senior Center. After much discussion, the Committee agreed that the event will be held on Saturday,May 14. CM Payton volunteered to serve on a subcommittee to assist with the event planning and promotion. Each Committee Member volunteered to help in the following areas of the event. The Walk: Hans Berg Art Show: Barbara Gifford The Breakfast: Greer Payton. Publicity: Luis Batiza The Orientation: Al Edge Staff suggested that this event be offered for free to all participating walkers. BY UNANIMOUS VOTE, THE COMMITTEE RECOMMENDED THE "STEP OUT FOR SENIOR CENTERS"EVENT BE HELD AT THE EXISTING DUBLIN SENIOR CENTER ON SATURDAY, MAY 14, 2005.
