HomeMy WebLinkAbout7.1 Review of Summer Community Leadership Program CITY OF DUBLIN YOUTH AD VISORY COMMITTEE AGENDA STATEMENT MEETING DATE: July 2, 1998 SUBJECT: Review of Summer Community Leadership Program EXHIBITS ATTACHED: None RECOMMENDATION: Receive Report and Provide Input FINANCIAL STATEMENT:: None DESCRIPTION: In an effort to develop leadership amongst the teen community and increase involvement in the Youth Advisory Committee a Summer Community Leadership Program has been developed. Before school ended staff identified 8th graders that had leadership potential with the help of teachers at Wells Middle School to participate in the program. An orientation was held on Thursday, June 18th at the Shannon Community Center. Eight teens signed up for the program and are currently participating in the program. There are three main parts to the program: 1) Program Development: Participants will serve on sub-committees that will be responsible for planning and implementing an event. 2) Leadership Development: Participants will engage in team building exercises and learn parliamentary procedures. 3)Introduction to Leadership Opportunities: Participants will learn about leadership roles available for youth in the community, such as Student Government and the City's Youth Advisory Committee. Summer Community Leadership Program participants are scheduled to help serve dinner at the Senior Center's Birthday Celebration July 10th and operate the Wet n' Wild Zone at the Water Carnival August 8th. The overall goal of the program is to foster leadership amongst youth in the community Recommendation Staff recommends that the Committee receive report and provide input. 4 I COPIES TO: ITEM NO. 7.1 G:\YAC\Statem-1\72cnrt.doc
