PARKS & RECREATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE
MEETING JUNE a, 198 MINUTES
The meeting was called to order at 7 : 30 p.m. .
Those Committee Members present included Joan Allen, Fred Drena,
May Hernandez, James Kohnen, Janet Lockhart , Liz Schmitt , Skett
Taigen, Georgean Vonheeder, George Zika.
Also present was City Manager Ambrose .
The minutes of the meeting of June 8, 1983 were approved as written.
George Zika indicated that the committee should look at the short term
recreation goals for next year. The committee discussed the appropiate-
ness of looking at short-term goals as opposed to long-term goals .
Each member of the committee then identified his/her priority for
recreation. Those priorities were identified as follows .
Zika - Parks & Recreation Director responsible for developing and
imp ementing a Parks & Recreation Program.
Vonheeder - Parks & Recreation Director, improved maintenance of
recreational facilities , latchkey programs at school facilities , allow
DSRSD to continue maintenance during the first year and ascertain
effectiveness , and look at capital improvements , but not on property _the
City does not own.
Hernandez - Parks & Recreation Director, picnic facility, and maintenance
of facilities .
Allen - Parks & Recreation Director, no capital improvements until City
owns property, improved facility maintenance , and investigation of
taking over parks such as Kolb and Cronin.
Drena - Parks & Recreation Director with good communication skills ,
utilization of vacant space at Shannon Community Center , take over
Shannon Community Center, look at improved maintenance of high school
fields and recreational facilities .
Kohnen - Parks & Recreation Director, preschool program, Jr. high
school program, latchkey and day care program, improvement of high
school athletic program, and adult and senior program.
Taigen - Recreation supervisor responsible for development and maintenance
program, utilization and coordination of school facilities , utilization
of summer and prison community help in maintenance of recreational
facilities , prosecution of those who vandalize and abuse parks , take over
Shannon Park, do away with community parks that cannot be maintained or
supervised, utilization of user fees paid by those who use facilities ,
and investigation of taking over Parks & Recreation Program from DSRSD.
Lockhart - Utilization of school facilities , particularly Kolb and
Cronin, sport groups should meet their own basic needs , and Parks &
Recreation Director.
Liz-Schmitt-on-behalf-of-Nor'b Hudak - City take over Cronin, Mapes and
Kolb Parks ; build barbecue pits ; takes out mounds in parks ; hire
Recreation Director; upgrade tennis courts and lights ; improve park
maintenance ; city bear cost of user fees ; and develop a teen center.
Liz - Parks & Recreation Director, after school program in every school ;
extension of pool program into September and October; do away with user
fees ; develop with DSRSD for maintenance ; encourage volunteers in parks
& Recreation in lieu of fees , teen center, senior center, and all
programs should be self-sustaining.
Allen - 4th of July fireworks celebration or other annual celebration.
The committee discussed its ' plan in presenting its ' report to City
Council . It was agreed that the committee would submit a..list of
needs to the City Manager to be discussed at the July 6 ,:.1983 meeting
in compliance with the original goals of the committee .
There being no further business , the meeting was adjourned at 9 : 52 p.m. .
