HERITAGE AND CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION
MINUTES OF: AUGUST 9, 2007
The August 9, 2007 meeting of the Heritage and Cultural Arts Commission was called to order at 7:00 p.m. at the
Dublin Civic Center, Dublin, California, by Chairperson Mack.

8.1 Heritage Center Status Report
John Hartnett, Heritage & Cultural Arts Supervisor, introduced Elisabeth Isles, Heritage Center Director, who
presented the staff report on planned activities and projects planned at the Heritage Center for the 2007-2008 fiscal
year, including: Dublin Book; CDL Grant; Archives Intern; Museum Assessment Program — Phase II (MAP);
Visitors' Center; Teen Apprentice Camp; First Saturday Workshops; Classes Archives 101; Book Discussion
Group and Pioneer Breakfast; Volunteer Program; Temporary Exhibits; Winter Concert Series; and Heritage
Center Newsletter.
Commission Comments
Cm. Lussie asked why the Archives Class was so expensive. Isles advised that the materials provided in this
workshop are far above normal scrap booking material, and will truly preserve photos. The supplies alone for the
class were about $20.00 per person. Cm. Lussie suggested adding the supply fee to the write up so participants
don't think the instructor is pocketing all of the money. Hartnett advised that the activity guide would include
supply information.
Cm. Acuff asked how much the Dublin Book will cost. Isles advised that the book is on sale in book stores for
$19.99, but the City won't be promoting the book until after it is presented to City Council on August 21. The
primary introduction to the public for the book will be at the Day on the Glen Festival, where the author will be
available to do book signings. Cm. Acuff asked if the Intern is archiving information for Isles. Isles advised that
she has not gotten to that point yet but plans to in the future.
Cm. Lussie was very interested in the Museum Apprentice Camp and was disappointed it was cancelled. Isles
advised that she feels middle school students may be a better target for the program.

Cm. Vonheeder-Leopold advised that the Dog Park Grand Opening was a great event and everyone had fun.

Cm. Halket thanked the City for the wonderful use of land for the Dougherty Hills Dog Park. Her family really
enjoys the park and feels that the park adds quality to the neighborhood.
Hartnett advised that the City will be sponsoring three family movie nights this summer.
Cm. Acuff loves the idea of family movie nights. It brings back happy memories from her childhood when
everyone would get together to watch a movie.
Chairperson Mack loved the Dog Park opening. She even spoke to a person who specifically bought a house in the
Dougherty Hills area because of the planned Dog Park.
Cm. Halket asked if we have a welcome kit for new residents. Hartnett advised that the Parks & Community
Services Department has created a packet of information for new residents on City offerings, facilities, classes, etc.
The Chamber of Commerce also hands out new neighbor packets for new residents. Cm. Halket suggested a lot of
internet advertising with information about events in our area should really help create interest in our services.
Chairperson Mack met with Tanisha Williams with Safeway. Safeway wants to have an African American cultural
event the 2nd week in April. Once Tanisha and the Mayor meet and nail down the details, she will have more
information available for the Commission and Staff. Chairperson Mack attended last weeks Summer Concert and
suggested the series could offer more dance music.
Cm. Carr suggested offering some Hawaiian or Cajun music next summer.
