Dublin Book: A new pictorial history of Dublin entitled Images of America-Dublin was released in July. The book was produced by Arcadia Books, a leading publisher of local and regional history books throughout the United States. The book includes 200 vintage images with captions that show how Dublin has grown from a farming town to the modem city it is today. It will be available at area bookstores such as Barnes & Nobel and Borders as well as independent retailers, online retailers and at the Dublin Heritage Center. The book was written by Michael Lynch, the great grandson of Michael and Mary Devany, one of Dublin's pioneer families. In researching his own family history, Mr. Lynch became an authority on Dublin's history. The goal was to have the book ready for the Day on the Glen Festival in September, to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of Dublin's Cityhood. CDL Grant: The Dublin Library and the Heritage Center applied for and received a grant for$5,000 to participate in a state-wide digital library program which will preserve and provide permanent public access to historic photos. Participation will allow anyone, from any computer, to see digital resources via centralized online access points administered by the California State Library. Elizabeth Isles and Lee Jouthas, Library have attended a training conference on the project and it is slated to be completed within a year. Archives Intern: The FY 2007-2008 budget for the Heritage Center provides funding for a Summer Archive Internship to (a) organize the photo collection, (b) input the data to "Past Perfect" Museum Software and (c) copy and place photocopies in a binder for easy public access and cross reference. Maggie Stockel, a student at Merced College, has been selected for the position and began working on the project in July. Museum Assessment Program — Phase II (MAP): The application submitted for Phase II of the Museum Assessment Program FY 2007-2008 was recently declined. The reason given was that there were many more COPIES TO: ITEM NO.: 8.1 G:\HERITAGE COMMISSION\AGENDA_STMTS\2007\8-09 Heritage Center Report.doc • • applications submitted than could be accommodated. Staff plans to re-submit the application again by the end of the year. Visitor's Center: The Visitor's Center in Old St. Raymond's will be completed by the end of the summer 2007. The Dublin San Ramon Women's Club generously provided funds to purchase a large flat screen TV and sound& lighting system. DHPA has underwritten costs for an Eagle Scout project that will establish a concession area in the back of the Church. The projects will blend with the historic building and will be unobtrusive for weddings and rentals. The improvements will enhance the tour experience, expand uses for the building (to include films and presentations) allow videos to be shown at weddings and memorials and to streamline concerts and refreshment operations. Teen Apprentice Camp: The Teen Apprentice Camp scheduled for August was cancelled due to insufficient enrollment. The concept will be re-examined to see if program adjustments would make it viable next year. First Saturday Workshops: The Heritage Center has offered "Quarterly Workshops" since 2002. The workshops have been sufficiently attended and have received positive feedback. The FY 2007-2008 budget for the Heritage Center allows a higher service level to expand the workshops to a total of ten per year. The workshops will be held on the first Saturday of every month from September through June. It is hoped that the regularity of the workshops will help. build audiences and create volunteer opportunities. Each themed workshop will have a craft, entertainment, food, costume and film element. 1. Maxine Trost, Archivist for the Lawrence Livermore Lab, will show participants how to organize photographs and documents in a way that will help them last for future generations. This one day intensive workshop will provide information, resources and hands-on techniques to help the lay-person preserve family photos and documents. Book Discussion Group and Pioneer Breakfast: The Dublin Library is sponsoring a"Community Read" of Snow Mountain Passage, the historical novel that chronicles the Donner Party struggles. Children can also join in the project and read Patty Reed's Doll. It is a natural fit for the Heritage Center to get involved because of the historical connections to the Dormer Party. On November 10 at 10:00 am, the Heritage Center will host a drop-in book discussion of Snow Mountain Passage. The Dublin Historic Preservation Association will serve a light pioneer breakfast. Costumed docents will welcome visitors and lead tours. Volunteer Program: Staff has been building an active volunteer corps over the past six months at the Heritage Center. Since teamwork is an important component of volunteering, regular monthly meetings called "Tea and Training" have been established on the first Wednesday of every month. The meetings provide the opportunity to set schedules, discuss issues, and participate in enriching activities like field trips to other historic sites. - 2 of 3 • Temporary Exhibits: • July 5 —August 24 - "Recovered Views, African American Portraits 1912-1925. • Spring Exhibit- TBD Winter Concert Series: • November 17 - "Dave Rocha Jazz Group": An eclectic mix of modern jazz standards, "pop" tunes and originals. • December 15 - "Bay Bells": Back again by popular demand, Bay Bells is one of the nation's longest-running community handbell ensembles Heritage Center Newsletter: The FY 2007-2008 budget includes funding for a Heritage Center Newsletter.
