Five free concerts will be held on consecutive Friday evenings from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. outdoors at the Dublin Civic Center plaza area, and are free to the public. Traditionally, the concerts begin on the first Friday following the July 4th Holiday. However, since July 4th falls on a Friday in 2008, the concerts will be scheduled to begin on the following Friday, July 11th, and continue through August 8th Staff is interested in considering the selection of artists for the 2008 summer series and would like some input from the Commission on the different types of music that would be preferred. Typically, the summer series 'features a variety of musical styles including; Rhythm & Blues, Cajun/Zydeco, Motown, Classic Rock, Country Western and popular music from the past four decades. Besides the general categories listed above, some other types of musical genera to consider are; Modem Rock, Top 40, Rock & Blues, Classical, Folk, Swing/Big Band, Dixieland Jazz, Hawaiian, Classic Oldies, Symphonic, Calypso/Reggae, Mariachi, Afro-Cuban, and Tribute Bands. In many situations, bands often play a combination of two or three different styles of music to provide a greater variety of sounds that appeal to a larger audience. For the Commission's review, Staff has compiled a list of bands that have performed at the summer concerts over the past five years, with attendance figures in parenthesis. Each band has been listed under a general category of musical style: COPIES TO: ITEM NO: 8.2 G:\HERITAGE COMMISSION\AGENDA STMTS\2007\9-13 Summer Concert Series.doc Country Rock& Roll (60's-90's) Contemporary Jazz Cow Bop (175) Dave Martin's House Party(200) Frankye Kelly(225) La Deana(200) Don's Neighbors (200) Downtown Allstars (220) Bell Brothers (250) The Back Pages (250) Pamela Rose (250) Stone Soup (275) Jukebox Heroes (225) Rhythm& Blues Caribbean/Latin Soul/Cajun/Reggae Busta Groove (450) Broken English (250) Zydeco Flames (325) Alta Rockers (300) Rolando Morales (300) The Parrotheads (500) Aja Vu(325) Soca Sisters (250) Tom Rigney&Flambeau(375) • East Bay Mud (350) Red Di (225) Alameda All Stars (225) Big Band/Swing David Hardiman All Star(300) Last summer, the Commission suggested a mix of music styles somewhat similar to the 2006 Series with genera such as Reggae, Big Band, R&B, Rock & Roll and Country. Staff will also consider summer concert offerings in surrounding cities such as San Ramon, Pleasanton, and Danville, in order to avoid duplicate bookings of the same bands. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the Heritage and Cultural Arts Commission receive the report and provide input to Staff. 2 of 2
