HomeMy WebLinkAbout8.1 Committee Appt - Poet Laureate & City Historian ' (COr 19 — 82 AGENDA STATEMENT HERITAGE AND CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION �IFOR� MEETING DATE: December 6, 2007 SUBJECT: Selection Committee Appointments - Poet Laureate & City Historian Prepared by John Hartnett, Heritage & Cultural Arts Supervisor ' ATTACHMENTS: None RECOMMENDATION: Appoint one Commissioner each for the Poet Laureate & City Historian Selection Committees FINANCIAL STATEMENT: None DESCRIPTION: Two of the 2007-2008 Goals & Objectives adopted by the City Council for the Heritage & Cultural Arts Division are to: • Explore the opportunity to develop a Poet Laureate for the City; • Explore the opportunity to develop a Historian for the City. Poet Laureate As,proposed, the Poet Laureate will serve as a public advocate for the appreciation and advancement of the literary arts for the City of Dublin. They will be a resource to Staff, the Commission and the City Council and be a liaison between the City's Heritage & Cultural Arts Division and local schools, literary organizations and bookstores. They also may assist with the development of classes and workshops devoted to literary works. City Historian As proposed, the City Historian will assist researchers, students, librarians, members of the public, the press and direct them to resources for historical information. They will be a resource to Staff, the Commission and the City Council and be a liaison between the City's Heritage and Cultural Arts Division and local schools, students, genealogical groups, members of the media and members of the public. The City Historian shall collect and build upon the body of knowledge pertaining to Dublin's History. At the November 20, 2007 City Council meeting, the Council approved both positions and authorized Staff to advertise the positions. In conjunction with the recruitment process, the Council directed Staff to form a Selection Committee for each position that will assist the Mayor with the screening of the applications and conduct interviews with the applicants. The Mayor will make the appointments with the approval of the City Council. COPIES TO: ITEM NO.: 8.1 G:\HERITAGE COMMISSION\AGENDA_STMTS\2007\12-6 Poet Laureate'&City Historian Appointments.doc The five-member Selection Committees will be comprised of the following members: Poet Laureate • Mayor • Heritage and Cultural Arts Commissioner • Las Positas r English Department Representative • Dublin Library Staff • City Staff—Heritage & Cultural Arts Supervisor City Historian • Mayor • Heritage and Cultural Arts Commissioner • Dublin Historic Preservation Association Representative • Tri-Valley History Council Representative • City Staff—Heritage Center Director Based on the above guidelines, Staff requests that the Heritage and Cultural Arts Commission appoint one Commissioner each to serve on the Poet Laureate Selection Committee and the City Historian Selection Committee. As per the Bylaws and Rules of Procedure for the Commission, the Chairman "appoints committees and chairpersons of committees as necessary." It is the recommendation of Staff that the Chairperson make the appointments. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the Heritage and Cultural Arts Commission appoint one Commissioner each for the Poet Laureate & City Historian Selection Committees. 2 of 2 •
