HERITAGE ,AND CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION MINUTES OF: AUGUST 10,2006 The August 10, 2006 meeting of the Heritage and Cultural Arts Commission was called to order at 7:00 p.m. at the Dublin Civic Center,Dublin, California,by Chairperson Mack. Pledge of Allegiance Chairperson Mack led the Pledge of Allegiance. Roll Call Commissioners Present: Acuff,White,Lussie,Vonheeder-Leopold and Mack Commissioners Absent: Fasulkey and Halket Oral Communications Approval of Minutes ON A MOTION BY CM. VONHEEDER-LEOPOLD, SECONDED Br CM. ACUFF AND BY UNANIMOUS VOTE, THE COMMISSION APPROVED THE MINUTES OF JULY 27,2006 AS PRESENTED. Written Communications-None Public Hearing-None Unfinished Business-None New Business 8.1 Dublin Gateway Medical Center—Public Art John Hartnett, Heritage and Cultural Arts Supervisor, explained that Dublin Gateway Medical Center was , approved by the Planning Commission in January 2005 and is located on the corner of Dublin Boulevard and Tassajara Road, within a&portion of the Dublin Corporate Center (formerly known as the Koll Corporate Center). Dublin Gateway is a medical office complex totaling 178,000 square feet. The focal point of the project is the circular pedestrian plaza located at the corner of Dublin Boulevard and Tassajara Road. The plaza will be defined by a low fountain wall and palm trees along the outer ring. Enhanced paving within the circular plaza creates a decorative look to the space which will be highlighted with the placement of public art in the center. As a condition of construction, the City Council required the developer,Triad Partners,Inc., to include a public art element in the project. The developer has selected California artist, Archie Held, to create the artwork for the project. Staff and representatives for the developer met on several occasions to discuss the design for the artwork. Mr. Held has proposed a sculpture entitled "Alamilla". The form is symbolic of strength and growth. The name is in honor of Dublin's historic Alamilla Spring, which has long served as an oasis for weary travelers. This bronze and stainless steel sculpture will stand over 20 feet tall and 9 feet wide at the top. The sculpture pool will be 18 feet in diameter and will provide over 56 linear feet of seating in the front plaza. The piece will be fabricated from sheets of stainless steel and bronze. The stainless steel will have a hand grained finish, resulting in soft reflective surfaces. Hartnett introduced Archie Held, Artist and Greg Collins, Triad Partners Inc. who answered the Commissioner's various questions regarding the functionality of this project and details of the design of the proposed sculpture and the immediate surrounding area. ON A MOTION BY CM. ACUFF, SECONDED BY CM. VONHEEDER-LEOPOLD AND BY UNANIMOUS VOTE, THE COMMISSION RECOMMENDED THE PROPOSED "ALAMILLA" SCULPTURE TO CITY COUNCIL FOR THEIR CONSIDERATION AND APPROVAL. • . • Other Business Brief INFORMATIONAL ONLY Reports from Heritage and Cultural Arts Commissioners and/or Staff Cm. Acuff commented that the Murray Schoolhouse 150th Anniversary Celebration and Exhibit Grand Opening Dinner Gala was spectacular. The display was wonderful and she was really excited to see traditional materials being used throughout the exhibit to really give it authenticity. Cm. Vonheeder-Leopold commented she was also pleased with the two events. Cm. Vonheeder-Leopold stated she was glad to see Elizabeth Isles receive the recognition she deserves for the wonderful work she is doing at the Heritage Center. She feels Isles is an incredible asset to the City of Dublin. Hartnett advised that the summer concert series was very well received this year and seems to be growing each year. He indicated that attendance was up approximately 50 to 100 participants per concert from 2005. Chairperson Mack commented that the layout of the summer concert series is great. It has all of the elements needed to have a wonderful time. Chairperson Mack thanked Hartnett and his staff for all of the outstanding work they have done and wants to commend everyone for their on-going hard work. Cm. White asked if we could run a longer summer concert series. Hartnett advised we could look into it when we review our goals and objectives next year. However, he indicated that there is a financial impact associated with the concerts and that the surrounding cities in the Valley typically offer 4 to 5 concerts for the summer. Cm. Lussie enjoyed the Gala dinner and the simplicity of the museum. The opportunities for the children to interact with the various displays and,s,I-Iands-On House are located where the children could really enjoy themselves. Hartnett advised that this area was specifically designed for parents to be able to enjoy the museum and keep an eye on their children at the same time. Cm. Lussie advised that the Monet exhibit is not to be missed. The exhibit is currently in San Francisco but will be moving to another location in mid September.
