DESCRIPTION: The California Council for the Humanities is sponsoring California
Stories Uncovered, a statewide campaign that will ask people across the State to tell and listen to stories
that reveal the truth beneath the headlines, statistics and stereotypes about the State and its people.
California Stories is a multiyear initiative designed to strengthen communities and connect Californians
by uncovering personal and community stories that, once gathered and woven together, tell the story of
today's California.
Elizabeth Isles, Dublin Heritage Center Director, has been working collaboratively with Lee Jouthas,
Dublin Library Manager, to produce a variety of activities that will stir and engage the community.
Dublin California Stories Uncovered will feature lectures by local historians and authors, book discussion
groups and classroom projects. Additionally, Dublin residents will have an opportunity to share their
stories, cultural heritage, and thoughts on Dublin which will later be compiled to create Dublin's own
anthology and"snap shot" of the community.
Activities programmed at the Library for California Stories Uncovered will run through the month of
April 2005.
RECOMMENDATION: It is the recommendation of Staff that the Heritage and Cultural Arts
Commission receive the report from Staff.

WHAT IS CALIFORNIA? WHO ARE CALIFORNIA STORIES UNCOVERED
CALIFORNIANS? CALIFORNIA STORIES PROGRAMS INCLUDE
UNCOVERED, THE CALIFORNIA COUNCIL • Exhibits involving new immigrant and refugee youth.
Working with photographers,videographers and curators in
FOR THE HUMANITIES' UPCOMING five communities throughout California,immigrant youth will
create public exhibits revealing their world and vision.
STORY—SHARING STORY-SHAR1NG CAMPAIGN, WILL GET • Public school programs. In a program developed by CCH
BENEATH THE HEADLINES, STATISTICS AND and the California Writing Project,a statewide association of
30,000 teachers,students will write about and interview
STEREOTYPES TO PROVIDE ANSWERS TO people in their communities to create public presentations for

INVOLVE A BROAD RANGE OF PEOPLE IN
•A new book: California Uncovered: Stories for the
HUNDREDS OF STORY-SHARING ACTIVITIES, 2I st Century, edited by the award-winning,best-selling
author Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni and featuring outstanding
FROM EXHIBITS AND INTERVIEWS TO contemporary and emerging California authors,will be pub-
lished by the Council and Heyday Books in December 2004.
PUBLIC SCHO+•L PROGRAMS AND GROUP • Programs at local libraries. Libraries throughout California
DISCUSSIONS. LEADING THE WAY WILL will create California Stories Uncovered activities,including
intergenerational story projects and reading and discussion
;=E CALIFORNIA'S YOUTH, WHO WILL groups using the California Uncovered anthology.

INTERVIEW ERVIEW FAMILY I�dE`"lBER S AND Uncovered contributors will be held in April 2005 in nine hub
NEIGHBORS, PROVIDING MOTELS FOR cities—Cerritos,Chico,Fresno,Los Angeles,National City,
Riverside,Sacramento,San Francisco,and San Jose.
ALL WHO PARTICIPATE IN THE CAMPAIGN. •A "Letters Home" contest. CCH and New California ,
Media,a membership association of 700 ethnic media
organizations,will invite readers,listeners and viewers to
submit a"letter home" describing life in California.Prizes
will be awarded to the winning letters.
