DESCRIPTION: The City Council approved the design for the San Ramon Village
Plaza development to be located at the corner of San Ramon Road and Alcosta Boulevard. The project is a
mixed-use development of commercial and residential property. The. San Ramon Village Plaza project
exemplifies the revitalization of an underutilized commercial shopping center located at a prominent
gateway into the City. The project consists of 56 walk-up style townhouses, on approximately 3 acres,
adjacent to a renovated 15,000 square feet of retail, on approximately 2 acres. The 3 and 4 bedroom
townhouse units are located within 3-story split-level buildings, each with their own private front porch
and two car garage.
As a condition of construction, the City Council has required the developer, Braddock & Logan. Inc., to
include a public art element in the project. The developer has selected Sunnyvale artist, Rachel Davis, to
create the artwork for the project. Ms. Davis, Staff and the developer met on two occasions to refine the
design for the artwork.
Ms. Davis received her B.F.A., specializing in Spatial Art, from San Jose State University, in 2004. She
has done several solo and group exhibitions in the Bay Area and has created site-specific commissions for
a number of cities including the recent piece "Tip", which was installed at Gordon Park in Milwaukee,
WI. Ms. Davis has also served as an assistant to world renowned sculpture, David Middlebrook. Ms.
Davis is experienced in all phases of metal casting, fabricating, and finishing.
Ms. Davis has proposed a concept that would incorporate the idea of a growing community, as well as pay
tribute to one of the City of Dublin's founders, the Irish. The proposal, entitled "Entwined", is to use three
curved steel panels of different sizes placed near one another to form a spiral. The spiral, found in many
examples of ancient Irish works of art, honors the Irish immigrants who settled here. Images of local trees
such as the oak and sycamore would be used as a metaphor for the growth and expansion of the City. The
tree branch designs would be water jet cut outs of sheets of steel and appear to be growing in an upward
motion. Each panel of steel with branch imagery would look like its own unique piece of artwork, but
when viewed all together, it would form a single tree. The location of the artwork will be at the corner of
San Ramon Road and Bellina Street. The three panels will be four, six, and eight feet high and made of

hot-rolled mild steel 3/8 inches thick. The panels will be mounted on'a cement pedestal and will be
illuminated with lighting from ground level. The steel will be coated in a green color that will compliment
the texture and colors of the commercial and residential elements of the project.
RECOMMENDATION: It is the recommendation of Staff that the Heritage and Cultural Arts
Commission receive the presentation by Artist Rachel Davis and recommend the proposed artwork for
approval by the City Council.
