HomeMy WebLinkAbout8.2 "Art at the Crossings" - Art Fest - Dublin Fine Arts Foundation CITY OF DUBLIN HERITAGE AND CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION AGENDA STATEMENT MEETING DATE:June 10, 2004 SUBJECT: "Art at the Crossings"—Art Festival-Dublin Fine Arts Foundation ATTACHMENTS: None RECOMMENDATION: Receive report from Staff FINANCIAL STATEMENT: D.F.A.F. received$5,000 in Fiscal Year 2001-2002 and is requesting an additional$5,000 in Fiscal Year 2004-2005 DESCRIPTION: In Fiscal Year 2001-2002 Dublin Fine Arts Foundation (DFAF) received funding of$5,000 from the City of Dublin to plan an Art Festival. Following is a summary, of the planning to date. ART AT THE CROSSINGS , Event Components Exhibition and programs will take place over a six-week period from August 19th through October 3rd at the Hacienda Crossings Shopping Center with a small exhibition in the Civic Center Lobby. The exhibition will consist of 8-10 large-scale outdoor sculptures in the plaza area of Hacienda Crossings and small works in the cases at the Civic Center. To kick-off the six-week event, an Opening Reception (by invitation only) will be held on the evening of August 19 in a restaurant at Hacienda Crossings. Artist Demonstrations will be held on a weekend in mid-September. Up to five artists or artist groups will demonstrate the making of their art. This group may include: Mural Making, Glassblowing, Weaving, Metal Arts, Ceramics (either hand-built or wheel throwing), Wood (carving or construction), Printmaking, and Environmental Arts. The D.F.A.F. has verbal interest from artists who have artworks in the community such'as Ned Kahn (environmental), Daniel Galvez (murals), and Johanna Poethig (ceramic tiles), as well as artists creating metal works and glassblowing. These artists will have separate booths where they can demonstrate their skills, display examples of their works, and interact with the public. The closing event will be art making for all ages with the emphasis on youth. Artists will be available to assist in working with the available materials, which may include paper and found objects for collage making,paper and tools for printmaking, or clay for the creation of tiles or sculptures. Additional Performances or "Happenings" may occur at various times during the 6 weeks - some may be advertised ahead of time and others may appear spontaneously. An "art movie" at the Imax Theater will be scheduled and announced in advance. Marketing and Public Relations The D.F.A.F. will work with a publicist to develop a detailed program for the event once the event components have been finalized. The Alameda County Arts Commission has indicated their interest in being involved in the event. Other institutions and organizations such as Las Positas Junior College or Cal State Hayward may be approached to involve students as event workers or docents leading the art tours. RECOMMENDATION: It is the recommendation of Staff that the Commission receive the report from Staff on the proposed"Art at the Crossings"Art Festival. -2-
