Pledge of Allegiance Vice-Chairperson Guarienti led the Pledge of Allegiance. Roll Call Commissioners Present: Guarienti, Zajac,Hildenbrand, Cain and Young Commissioners Absent: Flores Committee Members Present: Bielke and Silvas Committee Members Absent: Payton, McHugh and Gifford Oral Communications-None Approval of Minutes-None Written Communications-None Public Hearing-None - - Unfinished Business New Business 8.1 Dublin Senior Center Design Development Presentation McCreary reported that on February 18, 2003 on recommendation by the Dublin Senior Center Advisory Committee, the City Council approved the schematic design for the new Dublin Senior Center. Since then Dahlin Group has been working on the interiors and exterior finishes, elevations, building materials, etc. On April 10, 2003 the Architect presented the Senior Advisory Committee with two design options. The Committee requested that the Architect provide a third option. The Architect complied and displayed the design at the Senior Center from April 13 through today. Comment cards were placed by the design for input by the seniors. McCreary presented Karl Danielson of Dahlin Group to present the three options. Danielson stated that the last presentation focused on the exterior of the building. Using the design plans, he briefly summarized the flooring and finishes proposed for each option. Slate was selected as a decorative feature on the exterior of the building. The slate would also be used on the interior of the building wrapping the fireplace and reception desk. Three slate colors were presented. The flooring in the entry, lobby and pre-function areas would be a simulated limestone porcelain tile. A checkered carpeting would be inset in the tile in an area of the main entry and pre-function areas for variety and texture. The restrooms would have a similar limestone tile with a slip resistant finish. The main hall would have a wood floor made from bamboo, which is an environmentally-friendly building material. MINUTES —APRIL 21, 2003 PAGE TWO A patterned carpet with a solid-color border would be used in the library and hallway on the senior activity side of the building. A solid color carpet with small design features would be used in the classroom, card room, conference room and staff offices. Vinyl tiles in decorative colors would be installed in the art room. Danielson then introduced Gregor Markel. Gregor Markel stated that there was a lot of discussion on the lightness of the carpet at the first presentation. Therefore they purposely stained the carpet with coffee and tea. It was mentioned that a light colored carpet would probably not wear well. Cm. Guarienti asked Markel to comment on the slate color. The Architect stated that because slate is a natural material, whatever slate option is selected the colors, shading and hues will still vary within that selection. They have attempted to draw some of the copper coloring from the copper grates proposed for the exterior hoping to come up with something in between. Cm. Hildenbrand suggested that before discussion she would like the opportunity for the Commission and Committee to examine the samples. A short break was taken to view the samples. Cm. Guarienti asked for any public comment. Being none he asked the Senior Advisory Committee members present to provide input and or comments, as well as to report on the results of the presentation presented to the Senior Center Advisory Committee. Sr. Advisory Committee member Silvas stated that even though he was not opposed to the lighter carpeting, those attending the first presentation indicated that they would prefer darker carpeting. Sr. Advisory Committee member Bielke stated that most everyone she spoke to liked the lighter carpet because it was uplifting and gave a pleasant atmosphere to the facility. McCreary stated that over 3 days, 26 people at the Senior Center had voted which may not truly represent the preferences of all the Senior Center users. The top two options were A/Dark and C/Light. Option A received 8 votes and Option C 13 votes. Staff would like to get a recommendation on the option for the interior materials and the exterior slate. Sr. Advisory Committee member Silvas stated that the majority of users seemed to prefer the lighter color option. Sr. Advisory Committee member Bielke stated that her vote was for Option C for both the carpeting and slate. Cm. Hildenbrand stated that she likes Option A and Option C. However feels that Option A would be best when thinking about wear and tear. However if the checkered carpeting proposed in Option B was used with Option C instead, it would brighten up Option C. She could go with either option, but would really like Option C with the checkered pattern from Option B. Cm. Jones stated that he likes both Option A & C. Option B reminds him too much have the 60's & 70's. He would vote for Option C, as that seems to be what the seniors want. MINUTES —APRIL 21, 2003 PAGE THREE Cm. Guarienti stated that he originally liked Option C but when the carpet samples were viewed in the sunlight, he felt that Option A would be best from a maintenance standpoint. He also likes the suggestion of using the checkered carpeting from Option B. Sr. Advisory Committee members Silva and Bielke requested to see the samples again. They concurred with using the checkered carpeting from Option B with Option C. Cm. Cain stated that he would accept Option C with those modifications. ON A MOTION BY CM. HILDENBRAND, SECONDED BY CM. JONES AND BY UNANIMOUS VOTE, THE PARKS AND COMMUNITY SERVICES COMMISSION VOTED TO ACCEPT OPTION C WITH THE MODIFICATION OF THE CHECKERED CARPET FROM OPTION B. Parks & Facilities Development Manager Lichtenstein stated that it should be noted that because of the color range of the slate, Staff might come back with a different slate option that is very similar but may have less contrasting colors.
