SUBJECT: National Salvation Army Proclamation

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
The City Council will present a proclamation designating May 11-26, 2015 as Salvation Army
Week in the City of Dublin.

RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends the City Council present the proclamation.

DESCRIPTION:
This year is the 150th anniversary of the founding of The Salvation Army and May 11-16, 2015
is National Salvation Army Week. 2015 also happens to be The Salvation Army Hayward Corps'
90th anniversary. The City Council will present a proclamation designating May 11-26, 2015 as
Salvation Army Week in the City of Dublin.

A PROCLAMATION OF THE CITY COUNCIL
CITY OF DUBLIN, CALIFORNIA
"National Salvation Army Week"
WHEREAS, the year 2015 marks the 150th year of The Salvation Army and the 90th year of The Salvation Army Hayward Corps
which has touched many lives in the City of Dublin and surrounds, across the country and around the world; and
WHEREAS, during National Salvation Army Week, we thank those who contribute to The Salvation Army's mission, whether
through time, money or in-kind assistance, and we invite others to support The Salvation Army to help people in need locally,
nationally and globally; and
WHEREAS, the Salvation Army is synonymous with helping people and has been doing so since its founding by William and
Catherine Booth in 1865; and
WHEREAS, the Salvation Army Hayward Corps was established in 1925 and works tirelessly through the Corps' officers,
volunteers and community partners to create a destination for men, women and families where they can receive the resources they
need to begin their journey towards self-sufficiency; and
WHEREAS, today, the Army's services are stronger than ever. Programs that address some of the community's most pressing needs
serve more than 30 million people through almost 7,600 operational centers in nearly every United States zip code—about one
person every second. True to its philosophy and priority, The Salvation Army continues the dual mission of spiritual ministration and
of helping people with the basic necessities of food, clothing, shelter, friendship and love, regardless of religious affiliation; and
WHEREAS, our community depends on The Salvation Army and because it is not a government agency, The Salvation Army
depends on public support to continue its humanitarian work. This is especially important in these challenging economic times, which
impact The Salvation Army and many people in our community, across the nation and the world; and
WHEREAS, the Salvation Army has earned the support and confidence of the people of Dublin and neighboring communities by
their timely, dedicated and cost-effective services.
THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED, that that the Dublin City Council does hereby proclaim the week of May 11th-16th as National
Salvation Army Week.
