Foss, City Manager " SUBJECT: Report on 2015 Dublin Pride Week Activities Prepared by Kathy Southern, Environmental Technician EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The City Council will receive a report on the planned activities for the 2015 Dublin Pride Week, scheduled for April 25 — May 2, 2015. FINANCIAL IMPACT: Sufficient funds are included in the Fiscal Year 2014-2015 Budget. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the City Council receive the 2015 Dublin Pride Week activities report. "ubmitted By '�� Reviewed By Public Works Director Assistant City Manager DESCRIPTION: Dublin Pride Week is an annual event that seeks to promote a positive image for the City of Dublin. The primary objective for Dublin Pride Week is to seek ways to engage individuals and/or groups in action based activities to help improve the community. This year Dublin Pride week will start on Saturday, April 25 and will conclude on Saturday, May 2, 2015. The 2015 Dublin Pride Committee is seeking to build on the success of previous Dublin Pride Week events by engaging diverse community groups and individuals in the planning process. The Committee is made up of members representing the following groups: • City Council • City Staff • Dublin Unified School District • Amador Valley Industries • Dublin San Ramon Services District (DSRSD) • Zone 7 Water Agency Page 1 of 4 ITEM NO. 4.6 • Dublin Lion's Club • Senior Foundation • Dublin/San Ramon Women's Club • Community Volunteers This year's tag line is "Preserve Our Heritage and Grow Our Future". The attached brochure (Attachment 1) includes the winning poster from 2014 and includes information on events happening during Dublin Pride week. The Dublin Pride logo and slogan "Our City, Our Home" is an effort to recognize Dublin's contribution to the global community and encourages people to work to improve our world through environmental awareness and volunteerism as supported by the Dublin Pride Week activities. The proposed 2015 Dublin Pride Activities are as follows: Poster & Essay Contest: The poster contest has been well accepted in the past and has become a Dublin Pride Week tradition. The essay contest was added three years ago, and is being continued this year. The essay and poster theme for this year is "Water Conservation" The Dublin San Ramon Women's Club is tasked with organizing and managing the poster and essay contest. The poster and essay topic can include any ideas aimed at water conservation. The contest is open to all Dublin students in grades K through 12. Winning artwork and essays will be displayed at the Civic Center. Contest awards will be handed out at a future City Council Meeting. Food Drive: This year the Food Drive will take place on Saturday, April 25, as part of Volunteer Day. Collection bins will be set up at the Safeway store on Dublin Boulevard from 9 am — 6 pm. In addition, there will be collection bins located at the entrance gate and the Exchange Building at Camp Parks during the week of Dublin Pride. Collection bins will also be set up at Emerald Glen Park for Volunteer Day with a request for volunteers to bring canned food items with them to Volunteer Day. All food collected will be donated to the Dublin Children's Emergency Food Bank, which serves the Tri-Valley area. Household Hazardous Waste Collection: Dublin residents will be allowed to drop off household hazardous waste (HHW) free of charge and also pick up free compost for their personal use. Residents must make a reservation to drop off HHW and/or pick up free compost. The event will be held at MicroDental Laboratories, Inc., located at 5601 Arnold Drive (corner of Arnold and Central Parkway) on Saturday, May 2, 2015. An announcement with reservation information will be mailed to Dublin residents informing them of the event place and time. The Dublin Pride Week brochure and City website are also promoting the HHW event. Page 2 of 4 Bay Friendly Gardening and Water Conservation Workshop: The State of California is in a drought and we all know that water is a limited resource. Residents are invited to attend a free and informative workshop to learn how to easily remove their lawn and replace it with a drought-tolerant, Bay and pollinator-friendly garden. The workshop will focus on water conservation and will be held on Saturday, May 2, 9 am - 12:30 pm. Registration is recommended. Volunteer Day Projects: Volunteer Day is scheduled for Saturday, April 25, 2014 beginning at 8:00 am. The Senior Foundation is hosting breakfast and the event will conclude with a free BBQ at Emerald Glen Park by the Dublin Lion's Club. Volunteer Day projects include the following: Senior Assistance Projects Volunteers will help elderly citizens take care of home maintenance projects such as painting, cleaning, yard work and washing windows. School Improvement Projects Volunteers will choose from designated school beautification projects. Activities may include painting, repairs, cleaning, etc. Work is currently scheduled for Murray, Kolb and Green Elementary schools, along with Fallon Middle school and Dublin High School. Non-Profit Assistance Projects Volunteers will be helping non-profit organizations take care of maintenance projects such as painting, cleaning, yard work, washing windows, etc. City Parks and Facility Projects Volunteers will have the opportunity to help with various maintenance projects such as cleaning, yard work, spreading mulch, etc. at some of the following parks. Heritage Park and Cemetery, City Hall, Dublin Library, Dougherty Hills Dog Park, Emerald Glen Park and the Iron Horse Trail. City Creek Cleanup Projects Volunteers will have the opportunity to help clean up some of the City's creeks and waterways. Event Parking: The Emerald Glen parking lot off Gleason Drive will be available for volunteer parking. In addition, existing "No Parking" signs along the south side of Gleason Drive will be covered and not enforced to allow for additional parking spaces for the day of the event only. Public Outreach: The success of Dublin Pride Week is largely dependent on the public outreach campaign developed to increase the community's awareness and participation in the activities and volunteer opportunities. This year's public outreach efforts include: Page 3 of 4 • Website - www.dublinprideweek.com. The website was developed for participants to obtain up-to-date information on the various activities and volunteer opportunities surrounding Dublin Pride Week. The website also includes a place for volunteers to sign up to participate in some of the events. The website is highlighted on all media and outreach materials. • Promotional posters — Posters displaying last year's Poster Contest winner will be distributed to City facilities and schools. • Press releases sent to area media representatives. • Brochure- Dublin Pride Week brochure is distributed to all community and faith based organizations in the City and placed at strategic locations throughout the City. • School Newsletter Articles — Sent to Dublin schools to include in their school newsletters.
