Foss, City Manager SUBJECT: Dublin Public Library 100-Year Anniversary Proclamation Prepared by Rhonda Franklin, Administrative Analyst I EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The City Council will present the Alameda County Library with a proclamation in recognition of the centennial celebration of the Dublin Library. FINANCIAL IMPACT: None. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the City Council present the proclamation in celebration of the Dublin Library 100-year anniversary. Submitted By Reviewed By Parks and Community Services Director Assistant City Manager DESCRIPTION: In May 1914, the Dublin Library was established by Alameda County in a small room attached to the Green Store. Since that time, the Library has changed locations, multiplied its circulation materials, and increased in size to what is now a 38,000 square foot facility at 200 Civic Plaza in the Dublin Civic Center. Library Branch Manager, Lee Jouthas, will present highlights of the 100-year history of the Dublin Library. As part of the celebration, the Dublin Heritage Park and Museums will host an exhibit titled, “A Century of Service: a Visual History of the Dublin Library.” The exhibit showcases the metamorphosis of the Library from its humble beginnings in 1914 to its current location in the Dublin Civic Center. The exhibit runs from May 14 through July 31, 2014, and has been sponsored by the City of Dublin, Alameda County Library, Dublin Historical Preservation Association, and the Friends of the Dublin Library. Proclamation in Celebration of the Dublin Library 100-Year Anniversary Page 2 of 2 A PROCLAMATION OF THE CITY COUNCIL CITY OF DUBLIN, CALIFORNIA “Celebrating the 100-Year History and Contributions of the Dublin Library” WHEREAS, the Dublin Library was established 100 years ago in a tiny room attached to the Green Store on May 21, 1914; and WHEREAS, the City of Dublin, the Dublin Historical Preservation Association, the Friends of the Dublin Library and Alameda County Library are co-sponsoring an exhibit at the Heritage Park & Museums, A Century of Service: a Visual History of the Dublin Library from May 14 until July 31; and WHEREAS, the first Dublin Library Children’s Librarian was also part-time historian, Virginia Bennett, who wrote the first history of Dublin, Dublin Reflections, and was one of the founding members of the Dublin Historical Preservation Association; and WHEREAS, Virginia Bennett became the Dublin Library Manager in 1967 and founded the Friends of the Dublin Library who advocated for the building of the Library’s first permanent facility on Amador Valley Boulevard, which opened in 1979; and WHEREAS, the Friends of the Dublin Library has raised over $350,000 in support of the programs and services of the Dublin Library since its establishment; and WHEREAS, the City of Dublin has provided supplemental funding for additional hours since 1983 and continues to fund an additional 17 hours of library service per week; and WHEREAS, the new expanded Dublin Library opened to the public on April 12, 2003; and WHEREAS,the circulation of the Dublin Library is now more than a half-million materials per year, serving a growing population and open 47 hours per week; and WHEREAS, the Dublin Library has served the community for 100 years with distinction, as a destination serving the aspirations of the Dublin community for literacy, knowledge, lifelong learning and equal access to information. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Tim Sbranti, Mayor of Dublin, on behalf of the entire City Council, do hereby encourage the residents of Dublin to visit the exhibit “A Century of Service: a Visual History of the Dublin Library,” at the Dublin Heritage Park and Museums at 6600 Donlon Way, and I call upon the community to continue to use, enjoy, and support the Dublin Library for another 100 years.
