Celebrations for completion of the Historic Underpass Mural and
Fire Station #17 and # 18

Sufficient funds are available in the FY 2003-2004 Budget
DESCRIPTION: _ With the pending completion of the Historic Underpass Mural and
Fire Station #17 (Fire Station #18 is complete), Staff recommends that celebrations be planned to
introduce these projects to the community.
Historic Underpass Mural
In 2000-2001 the City Council identified the funding of a Freeway Underpass Art Project as a high
Priority goal. The freeway underpasses selected for the project included the underpass at Dublin
Boulevard and the underpass at Amador Valley Boulevard. The artist team of John Pugh, Daniel Galvez
and John Wehrle were selected for both underpasses.
For the unveiling of the Mural, Staff recommends a ribbon cutting ceremony at the Amador Valley
Boulevard Mural site. The Mayor, current City Council and the City Council from the incorporation of
the City (as they are depicted in the mural) would cut the ribbon. The artist team would be on hand to
answer questions of the public and lead tours of both the Amador Valley and Dublin Boulevard Murals.
Light refreshments would be serVed.
The Heritage dnd Cultural Arts Commission approved the plans for the unveiling but suggested that the
outside lanes of traffic on both sides of the Amador Valley Boulevard and Dublin Boulevard be closed as
a safety precaution. Staff concurs with this recommendation.
Grand Opening Celebration of Fire Station #17 and #18
Staff has met with Alameda County Fire Staff and discussed ideas for the Grand Opening Celebration.
The event would begin at Fire Station #18 .with an uncoupling of a fire hose (Fire Departments do this
instead of cutting a ribbon). The event would then move to Fire Station #17 for uncoupling of another fire

l~ose and the formal dedication ceremony. Although Fire Station 4/18 would remain open for community
members to see, Fire Station #17 would be the site of a community open house. The Fire Department will
have information available about fire prevention as well as a fire truck on display. Food and beverage
sUch as hot dogs, sodas and lemonade would also be made available for the event. There would be a
clown conducting face painting and a juggler on hand to entertain the children.
Celebration Date
Staff has developed two options for the date of the celebrations for consideration by the Council. The first
option would be to have the celebrations on two consecutive Saturdays with the Fire Station Grand
Opening on November 15 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and the Mural Unveiling on November 22 from
10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
The second option would be to conduct both celebrations on the same day, November 22, 2003. Under
this option, the Fire Station Grand Opening would begin at 10:00 a.m. and go until 1:00 p.m. and the
Mural Unveiling would begin and 12:00 noon and go until 2:00 p.m. The City Council could go from one
event to the next.

It is the recommendation of Staff that the City Council take the following
1) Approve plans for unveiling of Historic Underpass Mural
2) Approve plans for grand opening of Fire Station #17 and #18
3) Select a date(s) for the celebrations
