The City Council will receive a report on the planned activities for the 2014 Dublin Pride Week,
scheduled for April 26 — May 3, 2014.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
Sufficient funds are included in the Fiscal Year 2013 -2014 Budget.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends that the City Council receive the 2014 Dublin Pride Week activities report.

Dublin Pride Week is an annual event with the purpose of engaging individuals and /or groups in
action -based activities to help improve the community. This year marks the 30th Anniversary of
Dublin Pride, which is scheduled to start on Saturday, April 26 and will conclude on Saturday,
May 3, 2014. The 2014 Dublin Pride Committee is seeking to build on the success of previous
Dublin Pride Week events by engaging diverse community groups and individuals in the
planning process. The Committee is made up of members representing the following groups:
• City Council
• City Staff
• Dublin Unified School District
• Amador Valley Industries
• Dublin San Ramon Services District (DSRSD)
• Zone 7 Water Agency
• Dublin /San Ramon Women's Club

• Community Volunteers
This year, the tag line is "Coming Together, Building Community, 30 Years of Dublin Pride." The
attached brochure (Attachment 1) includes the winning poster from 2013 and includes
information on events happening during Dublin Pride week.
The Dublin Pride logo and slogan "Our City, Our Home" is an effort to recognize Dublin's
contribution to the global community and encourages people to work to improve our world
through environmental awareness and volunteerism as supported by the Dublin Pride Week
activities.
The proposed 2014 Dublin Pride Activities are as follows:
Poster & Essay Contest:
The poster contest has been a Dublin Pride Week tradition for many years. The essay contest
was incorporated into the contest two years ago, and is being continued this year. The essay
theme this year is "Coming Together, Building Community, 30 Years of Dublin Pride." The
Dublin San Ramon Women's Club is in charge of organizing and managing the poster and
essay contest. The poster topic can include clean -up projects; recycling; volunteering or any
other idea that reflects taking pride in our community. The Poster and Essay Contest are open
to all Dublin students grades K -12. Winning artwork and essays will be displayed at the Civic
Center. Awards will be handed out at a future Dublin City Council Meeting.
Food Drive:
Collection bins will be set up at the grocery stores within Dublin including the two Safeway
Stores, Sprouts, and Grocery Outlet. In addition, there will be collection bins located at the
Camp Parks entrance gate and at its exchange building during the week. All food collected will
be divided equally and donated to food banks that solely service Dublin, such as the Dublin
Children's Emergency Council. Collection bins will also be set up at Volunteer Day with a
request for volunteers to bring a canned food item with them to Volunteer Day.
Household Hazardous Waste Collection:
Dublin residents will be allowed to drop off household hazardous waste (HHW) free of charge
and also pick up free compost for their personal use. Residents must make a reservation to drop
off HHW and /or pick up free compost. The event will be held at the MicroDental, a DTI
Laboratory, site located at 5601 Arnold Drive (corner of Arnold and Central Parkway) on
Saturday, May 3, 2014. An announcement with reservation information will be mailed to Dublin
residents informing them of the event place and time. The Dublin Pride Week brochure and City
website are also promoting the HHW event.
Drug Take Back Event:
This year, the Drug Take Back event will occur on Saturday, April 26 in the Civic Center Parking
lot at 100 Civic Plaza. The event is being promoted through the Dublin Pride website and

brochure, and Dublin San Ramon Services District is promoting it through a residential water bill
insert.
Volunteer Day Projects:
Volunteer Day is scheduled for Saturday, April 26, 2014 beginning at 8:00 am at the Dublin
Heritage Park and Museums. The Dublin Senior Foundation is hosting breakfast and the event
will conclude with a free BBQ at the Heritage Park by the Dublin Lion's Club. This year, in honor
of the 30th anniversary of Dublin Pride Week, there will be cake to celebrate, a photo area where
volunteers can get their pictures taken and table decorations and memory sharing. Docent led
tours of the Heritage Park will be available following the BBQ. All volunteers will receive a 30th
anniversary pin and some other goodies to celebrate the day from the City of Dublin. Volunteer
Day projects include the following:
Senior Assistance Projects
Volunteers will help elderly citizens take care of home maintenance projects such as painting,
cleaning, yard work, washing windows, etc.
School Improvement Projects
Volunteers will choose from designated school beautification projects. Activities may include
painting, repairs, cleaning, etc. Work is currently scheduled for Murray, Frederiksen and
Dougherty Elementary schools, along with Wells and Fallon Middle schools and Dublin High
School.
City Parks and Facility Projects
Volunteers will have the opportunity to help with various maintenance projects such as cleaning,
yard work, spreading mulch, etc. at some of the following parks. Heritage Park and the Dublin
Cemetery, Civic Center, Dublin Library, Dougherty Hills Dog Park, Emerald Glen Park, Shannon
Park, Dublin Sports Grounds, and Fallon Sports Park. In addition, this year the Rose Garden at
Emerald Glen is being expanded with approximately 75 new roses being planted.
City Creek Cleanup Projects
Volunteers will have the opportunity to help clean up some of the City's creeks and waterways.
Rose Garden at Emerald Glen Donation Opportunity
To help support the expansion of the Rose Garden at Emerald Glen Park, donors are being
sought to "purchase" a rose bush for $100. As part of the donation, donor names will be listed
on a permanent sign at the park. Residents and businesses interested in information or in
participating can visit the Dublin Pride webpage at www.dublinprideweek.com.
Water Wise Workshop
Residents are invited to attend a free and informative workshop to learn what they can do in
their home and garden to reduce their water use. The workshop includes interesting talks by
experts on water conservation both indoors and out, including a keynote speaker, who will
speak on transforming a water hungry lawn into something beautiful and earth- friendly.

Volunteer Fair
Staff understands that the City Council will be considering a volunteer fair to connect residents
with possible volunteer opportunities with the many nonprofit organizations within the area,
which would be held at a Farmers' Market during Pride Week. Should the City Council decide to
proceed with this activity, Staff will include this item within the Pride Week outreach materials to
the extent possible.
Public Outreach:
The success of Dublin Pride Week is largely dependent on the public outreach campaign
developed to increase the community's awareness and participation in the activities and
volunteer opportunities. This year's public outreach efforts include:
• Website - www.dublinprideweek.com. The website was developed for
participants to obtain up -to -date information on the various activities and volunteer
opportunities surrounding Dublin Pride Week. The website also includes a place
for volunteers to sign up to participate in any of the events. The website is
highlighted on all media and outreach materials.
• Promotional posters — Posters displaying last year's Poster Contest winner will
be distributed to City facilities and schools.
• Press releases — Press releases will sent to local media.
• Brochure — the Dublin Pride Week brochure is distributed to all community and
faith based organizations in the community and placed at strategic locations
throughout the City.
• School Newsletter Articles — Staff will send articles to the Dublin schools to
include in their school newsletters.
NOTICING REQUIREMENTS /PUBLIC OUTREACH:
The public outreach for the event will be accomplished as outlined above.
