Foss, Acting City Manager SUBJECT: Proposed Senior Resource Open House Prepared by Amy Cunningham, Assistant to the City Manager EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The City Council has directed staff to explore opportunities to engage residents at senior affordable housing projects to provide information about available programs and services that meet their specific human service needs. This report provides information about a proposed Senior Resource Open House at the Dublin Senior Center. FINANCIAL IMPACT: Costs for this proposed event are estimated to be approximately $3,000 and can be accommodated within the existing adopted budget. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the City Council provide direction on whether to proceed on the Staff proposed event. Submitted By Reviewed By Community Development Director Acting Assistant City Manager DESCRIPTION: At the January 21, 2014 meeting, the City Council directed staff to explore opportunities to engage residents at senior affordable housing projects to provide information about programs and services available to them in the community. The City Council discussed the concept of organizing a Senior Resource Open House at the Dublin Senior Center. The event would host a small number of non-profit and social services organizations that may be of specific value to senior residents living in affordable housing projects. ITEM NO. 8.3 Page 1 of 2 Staff proposes that an open house/resource event be held at the Senior Center in late spring or early summer offering interested residents information about programs available to them in the areas of:  Senior Health Care  Senior Food/Nutrition  Senior Social Services  Senior Tax Preparation Services  Senior Recreation/Wellness Programming  Senior Housing Assistance Programs & Services  Senior Transportation Services The event would be scheduled for a date that complements existing programming at the Senior Center and is convenient for the organizations invited to participate. The intent is to hold the event on a weekday during regular business hours. This provides an opportunity for participants to see existing Senior Center programming in operation while discovering other program and service information that may address their specific human service needs. Staff proposes targeted promotion and marketing of the event at Dublin’s senior affordable housing projects: Wicklow Square; Emerald Vista – Carlow Court; and Pine & Cedar Groves. Outreach efforts could include activities such as direct mailings to residents, promotion through property management offices, City website, targeted email (via existing database), and the use of community volunteers to assist in spreading the word informally through community events, social service groups, and faith-based organizations. To encourage attendance at the event, Staff would contact local resources to coordinate transportation to and from the event for interested seniors living at the above affordable housing projects. Existing Staff will plan and coordinate the event. Direct costs for items such as marketing and postage are estimated to be approximately $3,000. This event would support the findings of the Tri-Valley Needs Assessment by providing needed information and resources to seniors in areas such as health care, food and nutrition, financial assistance, affordable housing, and transportation services. This event would also support strategies identified in the City Council adopted Strategic Plan: #5) Develop City-wide communication and outreach programs that provide connectivity with our residents and businesses across several media outlets. A) Identify new and / or enhanced opportunities for community promotion, marketing, engagement and outreach. NOTICING REQUIREMENTS/PUBLIC OUTREACH: None. ATTACHMENTS: None. Page 2 of 2
