Cultural Arts Classes Registration Report—Fall 2013 RECOMMENDATION: Receive Report FINANCIAL STATEMENT: None DESCRIPTION: The Heritage and Cultural Arts Division strives to develop quality programs that strengthen community image, preserve the City's heritage, provide cultural experiences and encourage appreciation of the arts. This is accomplished by providing diverse program of offerings for youth and adults in the disciplines of music; dance; fine arts; and visual and performing arts. The Division also provides a variety of programs at the Heritage Park and Museums to support education and stewardship of the City's historic collections. The following report is a summary of programs conducted during fall 2013. CULTURAL ARTS CLASSES Cultural Arts Classes provide a unique social setting for meeting new people or sharing cultural arts experiences with friends and family members. The variety of classes offered provides opportunities for community members of all ages to attempt new experiences or refine current artistic and performance skills. Classes are taught by contracted specialty instructors and are typically offered from four to eight weeks in duration. A total of 186 participants registered for Cultural Classes during fall 2013. This was an 18% decrease in overall attendance and was largely due to the decrease in non-resident registrations. The number of classes offered increased by one. While some classes offered last fall were not offered this quarter due to instructor availability, such as guitar — other classes were added, such as Fun Sculpting for Kids, Introduction to Watercolors and Ukulele. Mayor Sbranti served as emcee for this community event. The program of speakers included Camp Parks Garrison Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Gerdes. The closing concert featured "the CoolTones" big band that provided a musical program celebrating the "Greatest Generation." There were approximately 150 people in attendance. Holiday Concerts On Saturday, December 7 and Sunday, December 8, City of Dublin hosted two holiday concerts at the Historic Park and Museums featuring "Four and More," a five-piece band including sax and vocals along with piano, bass and drums. The concert included jazz tributes to the holiday season as well as traditional tunes that everyone can sing along with. Approximately 25 guests attended each day. PUBLIC ART PROGRAMS CITY—Emerald Glen Recreation and Aquatic Complex The "Call for Artists" closed on December 6, 2013 with 146 artists/artist teams responding. Applications were received from artists residing throughout the United States, Canada and Israel. On December 18, a qualifications review of the applicants was conducted. Consideration was given to: experience of the artist as a public artist, experience working with active construction projects; mastery of durable materials; ability to work within the project budget; as well as diversity of genres. Seven artists working in a diverse range of mediums were selected to propose site-specific proposals for review and consideration by the Public Art Selection Committee. These artist finalists are: • Benjamin Ball and Gaston Nogues (Team) • Troy Corliss • Blessing Hancock • Todji Kurtzman • Heath Satow • Christopher Weed • Susan Zoccola 2 of 6 On December 17, City Council confirmed the appointment of community members Bruce Gekko, Suresh Puli, and Robert Spicer to serve on the Public Art Selection Panel along with other designated representatives from specific community organizations. A panel orientation is scheduled for the evening of Thursday, February 20, 2014 to familiarize the City's Public Art Program and to review the process for evaluating the artists' proposals. The Public Art Selection Committee will meet on Saturday, February 22, 2014 to review the seven site- specific proposals. The Public Art Selection Committee will be charged with ranking the proposals for recommendation to the Heritage and Cultural Arts Commission and Parks and Community Services Commission for review and approval by City Council. Prior to being forwarded to review and recommendation by the Commission, the proposals will be available on-line for public review and comment. CITY—Dubliner As reported at the December 2013 Commission Meeting. Staff continues to work with artist Cliff Garten to repair the data lines at the "Dubliner."This artwork is still under warranty. HERITAGE PROGRAMS Visitors The "Visitors Comparison" chronicles the number of people who visit the Heritage Park and Museums as part of a formal tour or as a walk-in guest. This measurement also includes those who experience the Heritage Park and Museums as a participant in one of the many community events hosted at the site by the City. Tours are also tracked to differentiate between those tours that are a school group or those that are for some other formal or informal community group. • Tours. In general, schools do not take field trip during the fall quarter; however, four Cub Scout groups toured the Heritage Park and Museums during this quarter. The City also hosted the following events at Heritage Park and Museums: • Heritage Music Jam: This ongoing program continued to attract on average 80 participants per month. • Harvest Faire: Approximately 700 guests attended the "Harvest Faire" on Saturday, October 26, to experience a number of living history activities hosted by Museum volunteers. Activities included hand-cranking ice cream, churning butter, making apple pie, and doing laundry on a washboard. The event also offered wagon rides, shucking corn, and playing in the haystack. Live bluegrass music was provided by the Dublin Bluegrass Band and the Dublin Irish Jam Band. The 1910 Kolb House and 1850's Murray Schoolhouse were also open during the event for tours. 3of6 • Holiday Tea: The Holiday Tea was held in the Sunday School Barn, on December 7 and December 8. The event reached maximum capacity of 60 guests each day. Exhibits "Exhibit Attendance" captures the number of individuals who visit a special exhibit as part of a formal tour, as a walk-in guest, and those who visit during special events when the Museums are open to the public. "Keep Calm and Merry On: Holidays on the Homefront" opened on December 1 with a reception in the Little Classroom. The exhibit takes a look at the holidays during wartime when goods were scarce, but morale was high. It focuses on efforts to raise morale with special meals, dances, games and recreation. The exhibit also focuses on the personnel that passed through Dublin during WWII. The exhibit and will be on display through January 12, 2014. Volunteers are grouped by interest and may choose from a variety of meaningful areas including: Docents/Greeters, Collections and Archives, Gardeners, Walking-Tours and Tractor Volunteers. All of the volunteers were invited to the annual holiday party in the Sunday School Barn on December 4. This warm and festive gathering was enjoyed by 40 volunteers. Museum Volunteers are coordinated by staff and contribute approximately 54 volunteer hours per week during regular Museum hours. • Docent and Greeters Lead, Edy Coleman, helps to schedule volunteers for pre-arranged tours and special events. • Collections Lead, Steve Minniear, has been managing the work of young volunteers who are taking photographs of collection objects to add to the Past Perfect database. Students provided 36 hours of volunteer service in Collections. • Garden Leads Jim and Sue Farr have been holding weekly work parties at the DHPM. The Garden Group has re-established the rose and herb garden in the church courtyard. They also perform routine tasks such as leaf removal and general cleaning. • Walking Tour Lead, Rich Guarienti, is developing a tour of the area that surrounds the Heritage Park and Dublin's original "downtown." In early December, Rich led the "Trail Trekkers" on his tour. Feedback was enthusiastic and Rich will continue to refine the tour so it can be offered regularly in the near future. • Tractor Lead Russ Kennedy has winterized the tractor for non-use storage. It will be running again when tour season resumes and for special events. Student Volunteers. The Heritage Park and Museums also receives regular volunteer service from Dublin High School, and Dougherty Valley High School in San Ramon. Each of these schools provides twenty-five student volunteers for each of the City's quarterly events at the Museum. Students provided 125 hours of volunteer service for the Harvest Faire and 42 hours for the Holiday Tea. Interns. Rita Szollos, Cal State East Bay History Program has made strong progress in developing an interactive website that will show changes to Dublin over time. This past quarter Rita dedicated 120 hours to this project. The Sunday School Barn became available for private rentals on May 1, 2012. In the Fall Quarter, there were three rentals at the Sunday School Barn and seventeen rentals at St. Raymond Church. The overall increase of rentals at St. Raymond Church as compared to 2012 is due to a church that is currently using the historic site for their weekly services.
