Certificates of Recognition for the Winners of the “Dublin Idol” Competition

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
The City Council will present Certificates of Recognition to the six winners of the “Dublin Idol”
competition, which was held in May at the Dublin Farmers’ Market. Staff will also offer a brief
re-cap of the competition.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
None.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends that the City Council present Certificates of Recognition.

DESCRIPTION:
The City held its first “Dublin Idol” competition during “Community Night” at the Dublin Farmers’
Market in May. Hosted by KKIQ Radio’s Faith Alpher, the program began with a Preliminary
Round, involving 30 singers, on May 16. The competition was broken down into two age group
categories – 5th to 8th graders, and 9th to 12th graders. During the Preliminary Round, the
contestants were asked to sing a song of their choice for one minute, a cappella. Our judges,
Councilmember Gupta, local singer Marie Ratermann, and Youth Advisory Commission member
Marcos Castro, rated their performances on voice quality, voice control, and stage presence.
Ten singers from each age group advanced to the final round.
In the final round of competition, held on May 30, the singers sang a complete version of their
chosen song, with musical accompaniment. At the end of the event, our judges –

Councilmember Hart, Councilmember Haubert, local singer Kathy Blackburn, and YAC member
Angie Wang – named 6th grader Sophia Huang and 9th grader Autumn Kelly as our “Dublin
Idols.” Huang, a student at Wells Middle School, sang “On My Own,” from Les Miserables, and
Kelly, a student at Dublin High, sang “Dog Days are Over,” by Florence and the Machine. The
winners each received a trophy and a $300 check from KKIQ Radio.
In the younger age group category, our runners-up were Ashley Rose, a 7th grader at Wells
Middle School, who was awarded second place and $200, and Kyle Del Mundo, a 5th grader at
Green Elementary, who was awarded a $100 check for third place. For the older students,
Victoria Oblina, a new graduate of Dublin High School, took home second place and the $200
check, while third place and $100 went to Victoria Datanagan, a Dublin High 9th grader.
