HomeMy WebLinkAbout3.6 Jonnie McCoy-Howell Recog STAFF REPORT CITY CLERK File # CITY COUNCIL DATE:August 21, 2012 TO: Honorable Mayor and City Councilmembers FROM: Joni Pattillo, City Manager SUBJECT: Recognition of Poet Laureate Jonnie McCoy-Howell Prepared by Ann Mottola, Heritage and Cultural Arts Manager EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The City Council will receive a report on the accomplishments of Dublin’s Poet Laureate during her two-year term which expired on May 19, 2012. FINANCIAL IMPACT: None. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends the City Council receive the presentation by Jonnie McCoy Howell and recognize her work as Poet Laureate. Submitted By Reviewed By Director of Parks and Assistant City Manager Community Services DESCRIPTION: On May 18, 2010, Jonnie McCoy-Howell was appointed as Poet Laureate to serve as a public advocate for the appreciation and advancement of the literary arts for the City and to serve as a resource to Staff, the Heritage and Cultural Arts Commission and the City Council. Jonnie McCoy-Howell has been writing poetry, songs and stories since childhood. Within the past two years, among her new works were six original poems written and performed in her capacity as Dublin Poet Laureate. Jonnie McCoy-Howell’s accomplishments in her term as Poet Laureate include: ITEM NO. 3.6 Page 1 of 2 2011  February 5: Dublin’s Black History Program, “Expanding the Legacy” at the Dublin Senior Center.  July 2: Grand Opening of The Heritage Park and Museums, “City Event” dedication and honoring of the first Dublin family.  September 10: Dublin’s first Poetry Slam, Hosted by Dublin’s Poet Laureate at The Heritage Park and Museums.  October 22: Imagine Me, “Cancer Event & Award Ceremony” hosted at Travis Air Force Base.  December: Lights of the Valley Event, hosted by Hope Hospice. 2012  January 14: Celebrating African American Poetry in Dublin, hosted by Dublin’s Poet Laureate  March: Celebrating Poetry in Pleasanton, Hosted by Pleasanton’s Poet Laureate Cynthia Bryant.  April 3: Family Poetry Night, Hosted by Pleasanton Middle School Faculty Staff. th Since Jonnie McCoy-Howell completed her two-year term on May 19, Staff recommends that the City Council present her with a Certificate of Recognition for her dedication to the City of Dublin. NOTICING REQUIREMENTS/PUBLIC OUTREACH: A copy of the Staff Report was distributed to the Heritage and Cultural Arts Commission, and Jonnie McCoy-Howell. ATTACHMENTS: None Page 2 of 2
