HomeMy WebLinkAbout04-25-2012 APPROVED YAC Minutes CITY OFDUBLIN YOUTH ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES OF APRIL 25, 2012 CALL TO ORDER The April 25, 2012 meeting of the Youth Advisory Committee was called to order at 7:10 p.m. by Vice - Chairperson Sung. PLEDGE OFALLEGL4NCE Pledge of Allegiance was led by Vice-Chairperson Sung. ROLL CALL Committee Members (CM) Present: Jeanina Ng, Vivian Sung, Visesha Kakarla, Kush Rastogi, Marcos Castro, Dilpreet Anand, Brianna Barnes, Vinootna Kakarla, Akshay Aitha, Gabriella Basile, Cassidy Hearne, Grace Li Committee Members Absent: Sophia Bafaiz, Gabriela Vasquez, Shilpa Stanley, Rebecca DeGuzman Liaison Present: Jasmine Bafaiz, Parks and Community Services Commission Liaison Staff Present: Frank Luna, Henry Siu, Officer Dan Molleson Adult Member Present: Ashley Wolfe ORAL COMMUNICATIONS- CM Hearne informed the Committee that the Relay for Life of Dublin will be taking place on May 19th and 20th at Wells Middle School. If anyone is interested in participating or volunteering, contact Wells Middle School. MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING—March 28, 2012 ON A MOTION BY CM AITHA SECONDED BY CM CASTRO AND BY VOTE OF 12-0-0, THE ADVISORY COMMITTEE VOTED TO APPROVE THE MINUTES OF MARCH 28, 2012 AS PRESENTED. WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS—None UNFINISHED BUSINESS—None NEW BUSINESS Youth Fee Assistance Fundraising, Teen Special Events, and Texting and Driving Educational Campaign Subcommittee Reports Special Event Presentation A fundraiser was held at Rock n' Jump on April 5th and raised $125 benefiting the Youth Fee Assistance Program. Staff Member Siu provided an update on the All-America Car Show held April 21st at the Heritage Park and Museums. The event had over 100 cars displayed for community members to view. Four food trucks were onsite to provide food for the people in attendance which numbered around 400 throughout the day. Everyone in attendance appeared to have a great time. Texting while Driving The Texting and Driving Subcommittee's has had a difficult time creating a video regarding the negative effects of texting while driving. CM Sung stated that students at Dublin High recently saw the "Every 15 minutes" presentation at school which related to drunk driving. CM Castro suggested that the Youth Advisory Committee stage a "mock" pull over by Dublin Police for texting while driving near Dublin High so students can see the consequences when texting and driving. Staff asked Officer Molleson if that could be a possibility. Officer Molleson will check with Police Management and the School District if this event can occur. CM Castro volunteered to be "pulled over" by Dublin Police if this event is approved. Committee Members believe this would be a great way to "spread the word" about the consequence of being caught texting will driving. The Special Events Subcommittee Members volunteered at the booth during the St. Patrick's Day Festival on March 17th and 18th. Committee Members had a spinning wheel where festival goers spun the wheel for a donation and won various prizes. The committee collected $289 during the weekend, with the proceeds going to the Youth Fee Assistance Program. Youth Advisory Committee Annual Report for 2011-2012 Term Committee Members volunteer to create and present a Power Point presentation to highlight the accomplishments of YAC during the 2011-2012 term. Committee Members will present their presentation to the Parks and Community Service Commission and the City Council. Committee Members Castro, Rastogi, Sung, and Visesha Kakarla volunteered to create and present the Power Point presentation. The presentation is tentatively planned for July. Youth Advisory Committee and Parks and Community Services Student Commissioner Applications for 2012-2013 Term Staff provided Committee Members with applications for the Student Commissioner for the Parks and Community Services Commission and the Youth Advisory Committee. Staff encouraged current members to apply as well as their friends and classmates. Applications are due April 27th.
