Linda Thuman, Lieutenant Dublin Police Service$;> EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Dublin Police Services' Crime Prevention Unit was awarded a 2011 Target Public Safety Grant from Target Corporation. The donation amount of $3,000 will be used to provide preventative training in identity theft and fraud to Dublin residents and local businesses. The Dublin City Council will present Target Corporation with a Certificate of Appreciation for the grant funds. FINANCIAL IMPACT: The $3,000 grant will allow Dublin Police Services to host a personal document shredding event for residents and an identity theft and fraud prevention seminar to local businesses. This grant is not part of the original adopted budget; approval of a Budget Change that recognizes the new revenue and expenditure is necessary. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the City Council accept the $3,000 grant, approve the Budget Change and formally recognize the donor. In May 2011, Dublin Police Services submitted.a grant application to Target Corporation requesting funds to expand its identity theft and fraud prevention outreach.efforts. On July 27, 2011, Dublin Police Services received a letter from Target Corporation awarding the City of Dublin $3,000 from the 2011 Target Public Safety Grant [Attachment 1]. In Fall 2011 a portion of the funds will be used to conduct a free personal document shredding event for Dublin residents. Promotional giveaways educating residents on how to avoid identity theft will be distributed at the event. Local businesses will be educated on identity theft and fraud prevention at an educational seminar hosted by Dublin Police Services and scheduled .to coincide with the commencement of the holiday shopping season. The seminar will include identity theft and fraud prevention from the perspective of businesses as~well as Dublin Police Services' annual holiday crime suppression activities and methodology. Presenters at the seminar will include a consultant who is specially trained in identity theft and fraud preven#ion, the Alameda County District Attorney's Office, and Dublin Police Officers. - Any print materials created for the events will be provided on a new webpage listed under the Department of Police Services' Crime Prevention webpage.
