Cultural Arts Classes Registration Report- 2011 2. Cultural Arts Classes Registration Report - 2010 RECOMMENDATION: Receive Report FINANCIAL STATEMENT: None DESCRIPTION: One of the Heritage and Cultural Arts Division's primary goals is to offer quality programs that strengthen community image, preserve the City's heritage, provide recreational experiences, and encourage healthy lifestyles. These tasks are accomplished by providing a variety of cultural art program offerings in areas such as music, theatre, dance, and visual arts. For the second year in a row, as a cost savings measure, the winter and spring class sessions were combined in the Activity Guide so that the Department would only have to produce three seasonal guides instead of four, saving a significant amount on printing and postage costs. In light of this, Staff has prepared a comparison report that is a summary of programs conducted during the combined winter/spring seasons of 2011 and 2010. CULTURAL ARTS CLASSES Cultural Arts Classes are intended to serve customers of all ages and cover a wide range of activities such as Theatre Camps, Dance Camps and classes such as Ballet, Singing, Piano, Guitar, Country Line Dance, Irish Dance, Drawing and Painting, Kindermusik, and others. Cultural Arts Classes provide an opportunity for participants to attempt new experiences, refine current artistic skills and provide a social setting for meeting new people and sharing cultural arts experiences with friends and family members. Cultural Arts Classes are taught by contracted specialty instructors. Most classes are taught in eight-week sessions but some are more or less than eight weeks and others are offered as one-time workshops. A total of 710 participants registered for Cultural Arts Classes during the winter/spring 2011 session, which was an increase of 18% compared to enrollment for winter/spring 2010. Staff believes that combining the two seasons of winter and spring appears to have caught on with registrants, as this is the second year Staff combined the winter and spring sessions into one. Seventeen more classes were held in winter/spring 2011 as compared to last year. The cancellation rate was 2% higher than 2010, primarily due to new classes being offered that didn't meet minimum participation goals. The average registration COPIES TO: ITEM NO: 8.2 G \IIERITAGE COMMISSION\AGENDA STMTS\2011\5-12-11 Wing Seasonal Report.doc per class decreased from 8.4 participants to 8 participants per class. Total revenue from class fees was up this year from $54,077 in winter/spring 2010 to $60,839 in winter/spring 2011. The fall season of fiscal year 2010-2011 was up this year by 13% as well, representing an increase of $4,308. Attachment I is a detailed Cultural Arts Classes Registration Report for winter/spring 2010, which includes a breakdown of classes offered as well as the registration for each class. Attachment 2 is a Registration Report for winter/spring 2009 for comparison purposes.
