This item recognizes the achievements of the school and its students for involvement in the program as well as the donation of goods by local businesses to the program. FINANCIAL IMPACT: None RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the City Council recognize Murray Elementary School for its outstanding participation and Dublin Cyclery, Earl Anthony's Dublin Bowl, Livermore Cyclery, World of Shoes, and Yogur"nd for their donations regarding the "Walk 'n' Roll to School" program. ��3"ubmitted By ' Public Works Director A-- Reviewec4y Assistant City Manager Page 1 of 2 ITEM NO. 3 o� G DESCRIPTION: During the month of October 2010, four (4) elementary schools in the Tri-Valley Area were selected to promote alternate methods of getting to and from school through participation in the "Walk `n' Roll to School" program. The program, sponsored by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD), encouraged walking and biking to school as opposed to being dropped off in a vehicle, leading to benefits such as an increase in youth health and exercise and a reduction in vehicular traffic at the schools. This year the City of Dublin was represented by Murray Elementary School. The program was promoted with a school assembly on September 23, 2010 featuring Mayor Sbranti, then Vice Mayor Hildenbrand, Councilmember Biddle, and members of Dublin Police Services, as well as two morning breakfast events organized by the Parent Faculty Club. Giveaways for Walk `n' Roll participants included reflective decal stickers, water bottles, frozen yogurt coupons, and glow-in-the-dark wristbands. The City of Dublin also created a"Safer Routes to School" map showing the safest ways to walk or roll to Murray Elementary, which was presented to the school and is now displayed in the administration office. - Approximately 26% of the student body (113 students out of 429) registered for the program; of those registered, 65 students also turned in their calendars (BAAQMD qualification for "fully participating" in the program). Additionally, 82% of the participants at Murray Elementary walked or biked to school more than half of the month in October. Special congratulations go to . Mrs. Plenchner's and Mrs. Fisher's classes, with the highest percentage of participating students of the entire school (28% and 30%, respectively). A prize assembly was held on Monday, November 15, 2010 where a total of 13 prizes were handed out to students. Councilmember Biddle was on hand to help distribute the awards to the winners, who were selected from the pool of participants in a random drawing. Prizes donated from local businesses include: ~ • 4$100 gift certificates donated by Dublin Cyclery • 2"5 free games" gift certificates donated by Earl Anthony's Dublin Bowl • 5$5 gift certificates donated by Livermore Cyclery • 2$25 gift certificates donated by World of Shoes • 2$20 gift certificates and 550 "3 ounce free" coupons donated by Yogurtland Members of the Tri-Valley Air Quality Resource Team will review the program and determine if there is sufficient funding in the team's FY 2011-2012 budget. to continue the program or possibly expand it to additional schools. The program is sponsored by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District and.coordinated by the Tri- Valley Air Quality Resource Team in cooperation with the Safe Routes to School Program through TransForm. "The goal of the Walk `n' Roll to School program is for parents and students to adopt these practices on a more permanent basis, as it promotes healthy activities and reduces the amount of traffic around the schools," said Erin Steffen, administrative analyst with the City of Dublin. "Car congestion around schools puts a concentrated amount of air poNution around chifdren first thing in the morning," said Jack Broadbent, executive officer of the Air District. "Programs like the Walk `n' Roll to School are a great way to help children build healthy habits that can last a lifetime and encourage their parents to rethink their own commuting habits." Four elementary schools in the Tri-Valley will participate in the month-long program, which is highlighted during International Walk to School Week, Oct. 4-8. Specific event dates are listed below. The four Tri- Valley schools participating in the program include: • Murray Elementary, 8435 Davona Drive, Dublin - Wednesday, Oct. 6 from 8:00 - 8:30 a.m. • Neil Armstrong Elementary, 2849 Calais Drive, San Ramon - Wednesday, Oct. 6 from 8:40 - 9:15 a.m. Valley View Elementary, 480 Adams Way, Pleasanton - Thursday, Oct. 7 from 7:45 - 8:15 a.m. Junction Avenue K-8 School, 298 Junction Avenue, Livermore - Wednesday, Oct. 6 from 7:55 - 8:25 a.m. Participating students will track the number of days they bike or walk to school rather than being driveri. Throughout the. month, they will be rewarded with surprise treats and giveaways. Additionally, prizes will be awarded at the end of the campaign, courtesy of local businesses including Dublin Cyclery, Palo Alto Medical Foundation, Earl Anthony's Dublin Bowl, Livermore Cycfery, Wor1d of Shoes, Viva Yogurt, Cooleykatz Toys, Cinema West, Yogurtland and Valley Rock Climbing Gym. "This program allows parents to spend time with their children and experience the benefits that walking to school provides," said Lisa Adamos, economic development specialist with the City of Pleasanton. "Classmates, friends and family embarking on this fun program together instill a sense of pride.
