1VIINUTES OF: June 12,2008
The June 12, 2008 meeting of the Heritage and Cultural Arts Commission was called to order at 7:04 p.m.
at the Dublin Civic Center, Dublin, California, by Vice Chair Carr.
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
Vice Chair Carr led the Pledge of Allegiance.
ROLL CALL
Commissioners Present: Carr, Halket, Mack, Lussie, and Vonheeder-Leopold. Chair Swalwell
arrived at 7:10 p.m.
Commissioners Absent: Acuff
ORAL COMMUNICATIONS - None
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
On a motion by Cm. Vonheeder-Leopold, seconded by Cm. Mack, and by a vote of 5-0-0 with Chair
Swalwell and Cm. Acuff absent, the Commission approved the minutes of April 10, 2008 as presented.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS - None
NEW BUSINESS
8.1 Tralee Development - Public Art
Mr. John Hartnett, Heritage & Cultural Arts Supervisor, presented the specifics of the item as outlined in
the Staff Report.
Ms. Rachel Davis, Artist, further described the design, materials, and construction of the proposed
artwork.
Cm. Lussie stated that she liked the literal interpretation of the rose and that the size of the rose would be
most impressive. She asked about the direction the artwork would face. Ms. Davis explained that a side
view of the iose would face the entrance of the development.
Cm. Mack asked if the artwork would be illuminated at night. Ms. Davis explained that additional
lighting would be provided to illuminate the artwork.
Cm. Vonheeder-Leopold asked about the timeframe for the project. Ms. Davis anticipated that it would
take four to six months to complete the fabrication and installation of the artwork.
On a motion by Cm. Lussie, seconded by Cm. Vonheeder-Leopold, and by a vote of 6-0-0, with Cm.
Acuff absent, the Commission voted to recommend City Council approval of the proposed artwork.

8.2 Mayor's Appointment of Poet Laureate and City Historian Volunteer Positions
Mr. John Hartnett, Heritage & Cultural Arts Supervisor, presented the specifics of the item as outlined in
the Staff Report.
Ms. Ronnie Holland, newly appointed City of Dublin Poet Laureate, expounded upon her goals and
objectives as Poet Laureate.
Chair Swalwell asked if there was an association of Poet Laureates. Ms. Holland stated that she is
currently looking into the existence of such an association.
Cm. Halket asked if she plans to work with the schools, and Ms. Holland said yes.
Cm. Vonheeder-Leopold, and newly appointed City of Dublin Historian, expounded upon her goals and
objectives as City Historian.
The Commission congratulated both on their newly appointed positions.
8.3 Proposed Five-Year Capital Improvement Program-2008-2013
Mr. John Hartnett, Heritage & Cultural Arts Supervisor, presented the specifics of the item as outlined in
the Staff Report.
Cm. Lussie asked if art would be incorporated into the existing bus shelters. Mr. Hartnett explained that a
total of eight bus shelters or bus shelter sites wil] be replaced with new bus shelters similar to the shelter
design in front of Sybase. He further stated that all eight bus shelters will have student artwork murals.
Cm. Lussie asked what would become of the existing stainless steel bus shelters. Mr. Hartnett stated that
the stainless steel bus shelters will remain in place at this time.
On a motion by Cm. Lussie, seconded by Cm. Mack, and by a vote of 6-0-0, with Cm. Acuff absent, the
Commission voted to confirm the proposed Five-Year Capital Improvement Program-2008-2013 priorities
as proposed by Staff.

9.1 Brief INFORMATIONAL ONLY Reports from Heritage and Cultural Arts

Cm. Lussie reminded the Commission of the Alameda County Library Foundation Gala taking place
tomorrow evening.
Cm. Vonheeder-Leopold reported that she attended the Ice Cream Social last week at the Dublin Heritage
Center.

Cm. Carr reported on the Dublin San Ramon Women's Club Student Art Contest Awards and the Club's
member art photography contest. She stated that her photography, displaying volunteers in action, won
first place in the District and State.
Cm. Swalwell reported that he will be going to New Orleans, Louisiana next week.
Cm. Halket reported that she is the president of the Dublin Sister City Association, and that the
Association is hosting a "family night" at the July 25, 2008 Dublin Summer Concert.
Cm. Mack reminded all of the upcoming Dublin Summer Concert Series.
Mr. Hartnett also reminded everyone of the Dublin Summer Concert Series, and that he would be
attending a public art conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania next week.

Being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:53 p.m.
