FINANCIAL STATEMENT: None
DESCRIPTION: The Heritage and Cultural Arts Division develops and implements
quality programs that strengthen community image, preserve the City's heritage, provide recreational
experiences, and encourage healthy lifestyles. This is accomplished by providing diverse cultural
program offerings in areas such as music, theatre, dance, and visual arts. Following is a summary of
programs conducted during winter 2008.
CULTURAL ARTS CLASSES:
Cultural Arts Classes are intended to serve customers of all ages and cover a wide range of activities such
as Theatre Camps, Dance Camps, Ballet, Piano, Guitar, Country Line Dance, Irish Dance, Drawing and
Painting, Kindermusik, and others. Cultural Arts Classes provide an opportunity for participants to
attempt new experiences, refine current artistic skills, as well as providing a social setting for meeting
new people and sharing cultural arts experiences with friends and family members. Cultural Arts Classes
are taught by contracted specialty instructors. Most classes are taught in eight-week sessions but some are
more or less than eight weeks and others are offered as one-time workshops.
A totai of 400 participants registered for Cultural Arts Classes during winter 2008, which was an increase
of 6% compared to enrollment for winter 2007. Additionally, seven more classes were held in winter 2008
as compared to winter 2007. The cancellation rate was 18% lower than 2007, as Staff made an effort to
purge classes that did not previously meet participation minimums. The average registration per class
decreased approximately two participants per class. A number of classes that didn't reach minimum
enrollments and were canceled were, in some cases, either new classes or new one time workshops. Total
revenue from class fees was up significantly this winter, from $28,290 in winter 2007 to $35,419 in 2008.
Popular classes included; Hip Hop for Youth, Belly Dance, Ballet, Country Line Dance, Stuart Little,
Dance Like the Stars and East Coast Swing. Attachment 1 is a detailed Cultural Arts Classes Registration

Report for winter 2008, which includes a breakdown of classes offered as well as the registration for each
class. Attachment 2 is a Registration Report for winter 2007 for comparison purposes.
New Classes
• Dance Like the Stars-Ballroom Basics: Thirty participants enrolled in this new eight-week adult
dance class that was held at the Dublin Senior Center. A contract instructor with over 20 years of
experience in different styles of formal dancing has been brought in to expand classes in adult
dancing.
• East Coast Swing: Nineteen participants enrolled in this new eight-week adult dance class at the
Dublin Senior Center.
• Wedding Days First Dance: Eight participants enrolled in this specialized two-day workshop
which prepared parents and engaged couples for the big day.
• Kidz Art-Squiggles to Grins: Nine participants enrolled in this four-week youth class for
children ages 2 to 3%z. The participants engaged in fun filled activities that introduced music and
art while improving motor skills.
• Tri-Valley Young Performers Academy: This program offered three new performing arts
classes entitled; Stuart Little, Flowers of Algernon and the Emperors New Hair. Thirty four youth
from ages 6 to 18 were enrolled in the programs which all culminated in a production for friends
and family at the conclusion of the session.

New classes for the spring session include; Literature, Crafts & More Session I& II, A114 Dance Spring
Break Camp, Young Performers Academy, the Cheetah & the Sloth, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate
Factory, Top Spinning 101 and Introduction to Genealogy/Family History.
Upcoming Summer Camps & Classes
Once again, in an attempt to reach the parents and guardians of youth in our community prior to making
their plans for suinmer camps, the Parks & Community Services Department is offering an exclusive
Summer Camp Brochure which contains all the summer camps offered by the City. This brochure was
made available at the St. Patrick's Day Festival, and registration for all the camps begins April 14`h, more
than a month before the normal summer class registration period which begins on May 19`h. The Dublin
Recreation Guide for summer classes will also be published and mailed to residents on May 5`h. Heritage
and Cultural Arts programs included in the Camp brochure include returning programs; All 4 Dance
Camp and Red House Music Camp, and new programs; Music Man Jr. Camp, Comedy of Errors
Shakespeare Camp, Disney Musical Review Camp, Abstract to Experimentation-Teen Art Camp, Travel
Back in Time-Historical Reenactment Camp and Let's Make an Exhibit Museum Camp.
RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the Heritage and Cultural Arts Commission
receive the report from Staff.
