SUBJECT: Approved Goals and Objectives - FY 2008-2009

FINANCIAL STATEMENT: None
DESCRIPTION: On June 26, 2008, the City Council approved the Heritage &
Cultural Arts Goals and Objectives, as presented in Attachment 1. The Council concurred with the
Heritage and Cultural Arts Commission's recommendation of twelve goals in FY 2008-2009.
Additionally, Goal # 13: Facilitate the selection of public art for three (3) Private Development projects,
was carried over from FY 2007-2008 since two of the projects are pending completion in FY 2008-2009.
The Council also agreed with the Commission's recommendation for priority rankings with two
exceptions:
Goal # 7: Work with the developer to locate signiftcant works of art in two key places of the Dublin
Transit Center, the Village Green and the Iron Horse Plaza. The Heritage & Cultural Arts Commission
recommended a"Medium" Priority, whereas the City Council rated this goal as a"High" Priority.
Goal # 12: Develop a Black History Month Celebration in February 2009 working collaboratively with
Community Representatives was modified to read Provide public space for the communiry to celebrate
socio-cultural events. The City Council rated this goal as a"Medium" Priority.
Regarding Goal # 7, Staff is in the process of hiring an Art Consultant who will coordinate the Transit
Center public art project over the next year. The Transit Center has now reached 25°/a occupancy and the
Alameda County Transit Authority has contributed $250,000 for the project.
Regarding Goal # 12, although the Council rated this as a Medium Priority with no funding available,
they did indicate that if a committee or organization wished to present a program, the City could provide a
facility at no charge. Additionally, Staff is interested in presenting a February Workshop (African
American Folk-Art) and Winter Concert (African American performer(s) - TBD) that would honor Black
History Month.
RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the Heritage and Cultural Arts Commission
receive the report.
