HERITAGE AND CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION
Draft Minutes
CITY OF DUBLIN
November 13, 2008
The November 13, 2008 meeting of the Heritage and Cultural Arts Commission was called to order at
7:00 p.m. at the Dublin Civic Center, Dublin, California, by Chair Swalwell.
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
Chair Swalwell led the Pledge of Allegiance.
ROLL CALL
Commissioners Present: Swalwell, Acuff, Halket, Lussie, Mack, Vonheeder-Leopold
Commissioners Absent: Carr
ORAL COMMUNICATIONS - None
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
On a motion by Cm. Acuff, seconded by Cm. Mack, and by a vote of 6-0-0, with Cm. Carr absent, the
Commission voted to approve the minutes of October 9, 2008 as presented.

NEW BUSINESS
8.1 Summer Concert Series
Mr. John Hartnett, Heritage and Cultural Arts Manager, presented the specifics of the item as outlined in
the Staff Report.
Cm. Lussie stated that the concerts have been well attended and well varied in music types. She suggested
surveying concert attendees to get an idea of the types of concerts they would most like to see in the
future. IVIr. Hartnett stated that this is a great idea and that Staff would try to survey concert attendees
during upcoming concerts in summer 2009.
Cm. Vonheeder-Leopold stated that one of the keys to the success of the concert series is the variety of
music offered. Mr. Hartnett agreed and stated that the variety of music also brings in a diversity of
audiences. He stated that survey results from all five of the concerts should provide a good reading of
what audiences would like to hear in future concerts.
Cm. Halket stated that she has talked to concert attendees that have attended all of the concerts. She
commended Staff on selecting a good variety of groups for the concerts.
Cm. Mack suggested also surveying audiences and considering bringing back bands that have received the
largest turnouts in previous performances.

Mr. Hartnett asked how the Commission felt about returning bands for subsequent performances. The
Commission felt that returning a band is a good idea especially if the band received good reviews.
Chair Swalwell asked about the budget for the concert series. Mr. Hartnett staied that the budget is
around $8,300 for all of the five bands, and that fees vary based on the popularity and name recognition of
each group.
Cm. Halket asked about the locality of the bands, and Mr. Hartnett stated that most of the bands are from
within the region.
Cm. Lussie stated that she likes the idea of working together with different communities to obtain a
variety of bands.
9.1 Other Business
Cm. Vonheeder-Leopold reported that she attended a Launch Party hosted by the Dublin Heritage Center
and Dublin Library to discuss placing local historical data on-line, as part of the California Local History
Digital Resources Project.
Chair Swalwell stated that this would be the last Commission meeting under the current City Council. He
stated that he has enjoyed serving under the current City Council members and looks forward to serving
under the newly elected members of the City Council.
Cm. Mack reported that she attended the Hometown Heroes event at the Dublin Senior Center. She stated
that the event was well received and, as a Veteran, she appreciated the recognition for all local Veterans.
Mr. Hartnett reported on the details of the Hometown Heroes event. He informed that the second Winter
Concert will be held on Sunday, December 14, 2008 at the Dublin Senior Center, and will feature the Bay
Bells group.

Being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:21 p.m.
