HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso 055-82 BART 10thAnnivRESOLUTION NO. 55-82 RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DUBLIN COMMEMORATING THE TENTH ANNIVERSARY OF SERVICE OF THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA RAPID TRANSIT DISTRICT (BART) WHEREAS, the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District was created by the State Legislature in 1957; and WHEREAS, the voters and taxpayers of the three bay area counties---Alameda, Contra Costa, and the City and County of San Francisco---in November 1965 joined together to build the 75 mile San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit system project; and WHEREAS, on September ll, 1972, the fully automated train system began providing regular service; and WHEREAS, since the new system began operation, BART has carried 350 million passengers, traveling more than 4.5 billion passenger miles, without a passenger fatality; and WHEREAS, BART has been a major factor in the economic growth of the bay area since it has become a vital link in the public transit network of the bay area; and WHEREAS, today BART is carrying over 190,000 passengers every working day, which includes 30 percent of all transbay commuters, thus relieving congestion on our freeways, bridges and downtown parking areas by some 60,000 cars; and WHEREAS, the BART Express Buses, each week, make a total of 1,021 runs from Dublin which connect with BART at the Hayward BART Station, or the Bay Fair BART Station, or the Walnut Creek BART Station; and WHEREAS, based on today's projections, more than 250,000 passengers will be using BART by 1985-86, and over 300,000 passengers by the end of the decade; and WHEREAS, BART has embarked on an intensive $285 million capital program, designed to increase the capacity of the system, through the purchase of a new generation of BART designed cars, expanding the capability of the system's auto- matic train control system to operate more trains and to improve the system's ability to reduce the time between trains. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City of Dublin does first commend the vision and wisdom of the voters of the three BART counties, the owners of BART, for taking the initial steps which brought BART into being; and RESOLUTION No. 55-82 Page 2 FURTHER, BE IT RESOLVED, that the members of the BART Board of Directors, both past and present, be commended for their dedication in bringing the BART dream into its present reality; and FURTHER, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City of Dublin does hereby declare that the month of September 1982 be designated as "BART Month" in commemoration of BART's 10th year of service.
