FINANCIAL STATEMENT: Sufficient funds were included in the Fiscal Year 2007-2008 Budget. Other funds and in-kind donations were provided by the following organizations: Amador Valley Industries, citilinks, Dublin Lion's Club, Dublin/San Ramon Women's Club, Dublin/San Ramon Services District, East Bay Regional Park District, Safeway, Pete's Coffee, Mimi's Cafe, and Zone 7. DESCRIPTION: Dublin Pride Week was celebrated from Friday, April 25th to Saturday May 3rd. A number of activities and projects were conducted and are summarized below. Dublin Pride Week Poster Contest All students from both public and private schools in the .City of Dublin were invited to participate in this year's Dublin Pride Poster Contest. The students were asked to create posters that reflected this year's theme "Planet Dublin" As in previous years, the Dublin/San Ramon Women's Club volunteered to coordinate the poster contest. This included distributing the materials, judging the posters, and distributing the certificates. Each of the participants will be receiving Certificates of Appreciation. The City awards first and second prizes to individuals from each of the following grade categories: Kindergarten-2nd grade, 3rd grade-4th grade, 5th grade-6th grade, 7th grade-8th grade, and 9th grade-12th grade, as well as an overall grand prize winner. The grand prize winner receives a $100 Target gift card, the first prize winners receive a $25 Target gift card, and second prize winners receive a $15 Target gift card. The grand prize, first prize, and second prize winners also have their posters displayed at the Civic Center and will be presented with Certificates of Merit. Additionally, a Classroom Award is given in the amount of $200 to the teacher of the Grand Prize Winner to be used in his or her classroom. Over 90 community volunteers donated significant time and energy to community clean up and beautification projects on Volunteer Day, Saturday, April 26th. Volunteers met at 8:00 a.m. at Ted Fairfield Park to receive instructions and supplies for the various projects throughout the community. Mayor Lockhart began the event with a welcoming address and word of thanks to the volunteers. All volunteers were given Dublin Pride Week t-shirts and were provided snacks, juice and water including muffins donated by Mimi's Cafe. At the completion of the projects, all volunteers were invited to a free barbecue provided by the Dublin Lion's Club. Volunteer Day consisted ofthe following projects: Senior Projects: There were over 50 volunteers that made up the 12 separate Senior Project Teams. The teams were able to assist 27 senior homes with a variety of activities that ranged from cleaning windows to minor home repair. Heritage Center: Approximately 10 volunteers from the Dublin Fine Arts Foundation raked, pulled weeds, and engaged in other beautification activities at the Heritage Center. Wells Middle School Projects: Volunteers assisted in beautifying the school by completing landscaping and painting projects. Approximately 30 volunteers participated in these activities. Storm Drain Medallions: An additional 10 volunteers were engaged in pasting medallions to the City's storm drains, which warn against dumping material into the storm drain system. Bus Obscura The City of Dublin sponsored this program with the Dublin Fine Arts Foundation. The Bus Obscura traveled around Dublin, offering free 15 minute trips to interested community members. Trips were provided on Friday, April 25th and were available to all Dublin Pride Week volunteers on Saturday, April 26th, during the Volunteer BBQ Luncheon. Nature Day Tassajara Creek Nature Walk: Following the Volunteer Day Activities on April 26th, naturalist and park ranger Katie Colbert lead a nature walk along the Tassajara Creek Trail exploring the creek's diverse flora and fauna. Approximately 12 people participated in the walk. 3 ~4 Water-wise Workshop Residents went to the Armstrong Garden Center on Saturday, May 3rd for an informational workshop on drought tolerant gardening. Food Drive This year, Dublin Pride Week included a Food Drive. Food donations were collected at the City's two Safeways. The City was able to collect approximately 36 cubic feet of food. All food collected was donated to the Dublin Children's Emergency Council. Electronic and Household Hazardous Waste Event Household Hazardous Waste Event: The City sponsored another successful household hazardous waste drop off event. The household hazardous waste event was managed by Amador Valley Industries and held at the Micro Dental parking lot. A total 20,200 pounds of household hazardous waste was collected, ensuring that materials such as paint, used oil, batteries, pesticides and other harmful chemicals were disposed of properly. Electronic Waste Event: Dublin Pride Week also included an electronic waste drop off event where computers, televisions, and other electronic goods were collected for recycling. The electronic waste event was managed by the Recycle for Breast Cancer Program and was held Saturday, April 28th at Dublin GMC. 2008 Dublin Pride Partners The 2008 Dublin Pride Week events could not have been accomplished without the City's key partners: Amador Valley Industries citilinks Dublin San Ramon Services District Dublin Lions Club Dublin/San Ramon Women's Club East Bay Regional Parks District Senior Support Program of the Tri-Valley Zone 7 Water Agency These Dublin Pride Partners will be recognized by the City Council with a Certificate of Appreciation. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that City Council receive the report and formally recognize poster contest winners and Dublin Pride Partners. 4o;{~
